Although I understand the theory behind leaving your phone number so someone can call/text you to ask you to move (especially at a hotel), I prefer not to leave my number out for all to see, to be contacted at anytime, and by anyone, who may be more interested in my wallet or keys than actually charging. I would probably park and charge, check at some point to move it when it was done, and if there were no spots, leave it for the night, and check again in the morning.
+1. No chance I’d leave my number. I get enough spam calls as it is.

This is one use for PlugShare. You can leave an estimate of how long you'll be charging and even a note/comment if you want.
Thanks; I'm still waiting for my R1T. But doesn't using PlugShare for this depend on the person finding your car looking it up in PlugShare app? It would seem to me that many wouldn't be bothered. But I could well be missing something entirely. Someday my ship will come in!

Simple answer is the park in front of them so they cannot exit the spot. Surely they are aware of the cost of repairs to the car, so they would not even think of ramming your car to get out of the spot.

Get a free Google phone number.

https://www.appsverse.com/blog/how-do-i-get-a-google-phone-number/

What are the benefits of Google Phone Numbers?
The benefits of Google Phone Numbers are many. Having an extra phone number is incredibly useful in many real world situations.

For example, -You will not need to give out your real phone number with strangers - You can rely on your same cell phone plan minutes and texts -No need to buy new SIM card -No need to buy new phone -Get additional features like like free text messaging and voicemail transcription.

I have had a Google Voice number since 2009. I am still not leaving it on my car.

As EV sales increase, these types of situations will be even more common. Maybe a deck of cards with pre-printed messages to defuse frustration and anger?

"I tried to move after charging, but there were no open parking spaces anywhere. My apologies!"

"I'll return by XXX time, when my charge is estimated to be complete."

"All chargers out of service."
It's probably a temprary phenominom. The OP wanting to charge at Whole Foods is likely just because he is new to EV. In gerneral, and particularly with Rivian, you can't count on level 2 for a trip. Even with Tesla I plan my overnight stops in relation to superchargers.

As hotels put in more plugs the tendency is to drop the power. But we will eventually get to the point where some hotels will charge for the service and provide more power.

Free and uncertain charging isn't much benefit because it is unreliable for planning. Which is why Rivian's Waypoint expenditures are dumb.

Whole Foods putting a couple of DCFC at the back of the lot and charging for electricity would be a lot more useful. My most visited Supercharger, which is out of state, is at a grocery store. That is ideal.

It's an unusual situation where you would offer to unplug, so don't worry about it.

The more usual situration is that you would like to plug in and can't find an open spot. What this means practically is that your travel plans must include the potential for DCFC charging only. The only exception may be a multi-day stay where the management is interested in all the EV guests getting their turn.

A similar situation...someone parked for overnight charging had not moved the vehicle by mid-morning the next day. Fortunately, and unlike Rivian, the vehicle (Hyundai Ioniq) did not lock the charger head and - assuming the EV was fully charged after 12hrs) I was able to unplug and juice up!

Hoo-mans will be hoo-mans no matter what powers their runabouts - Rule of Acquisition No. 298.
Rule No. 298??? Wow, my version out the text is way out of date. Guess I'll have to visit the Grand Nagus store s00n ;)

I have seen this a lot lately, they use it to park close to a store but don't even plug in.

People are people, common courtesy is out the window.
If you say something they get irate, like you did some great harm or inconvenience to them.

A lot of this behavior is probably subconscious. Humans are weirdos about possessing scarce resources. The only value to Volta chargers at Whole Foods was to get their EV curious customer base to buy in.

Ironically, but the time the working poor get used EVs the free charging will probably be gone. For people who need to alter their spending at the end of the month due to running out of money, chasing down a bit of free fuel may make sense.

I found any free chargers at strip malls we have in our area are pointless. The few people who work there or live near it, keep their car plugged in and swap out with other co-workers/friends. When it's free, people will abuse it.

I think the only solution to this is where you see more signs on charging locations that state the parking is ONLY for vehicles actively charging. If your vehicle completes charging, after a grace period, you have to move it or get ticketed. It's inconvenient but that's the only way to allow others to also use it rather than sitting there taking up a space, preventing others from charging.

The area this gets tricky is destination chargers such as at hotels. What if your charging won't complete until 2am? That makes it a bit inconvenient for you. And will anyone really come out around 2am to plug in their car? The problem though is, you just don't know. So although it's inconvenient, it would still seem that this would be necessary so that other guests can also charge. (I can see someone reducing their charge amp so that it won't finish charging until later - if there is a way someone will abuse it. lol)

No need for free public charging any longer IMO, it just encourages bad behavior and for what.. $1 worth of electricity or an open parking spot?

I have also 100% parked at a ChargePoint and tried to plug-in and it’s busted. Twice. At that point, I’m like F it, I’m not moving..
I've only once stayed at a broken station. It was reported broken on plug share and sure enough, try as I might, I couldn't get it to work. I left it plugged into my vehicle not working and left another note on plug share.

In these situations, I always leave a note in my windshield with my phone number and a brief explanation of why I’m taking up a spot or when I expect to move. Never had a crank call, yet. People always tend to assume the worst and a little info is all that’s needed to defuse the situation.
