My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
This is my thought; I think the powered tonneau cover will eventually be a unicorn but don't know it it'll be worth the headache if/when it malfunctions even if covered under warranty. I'm sure aftermarket options will pop up which provide good manual options. Hopefully something like this

I feel itā€˜s my civic duty to point that, for the first time, I saw a Canyon Red today in person while dropping my Rivian Blue off at the South SF Service Center, and it was by far my favorite color of the bunch. So you do you, but man - that color is just <chef’s kiss>.

FYI if you get one with a powered tonneau, my head will explode. I took delivery in November and while the retraction HW is in place, the actual slats are not on the truck, which makes me crazy.

rank it— what is the level of importance for you? Receive a truck now vs Red Canyon vs powered tonneau. Then decide… go for what gets you 2 of 3!

it sounds like powered tonneau is only mildly important based on how you phrased your post…. But also don’t listen to any of the anecdotal hearsay on this forum about the tonneau plans— they're not more reliable than what Rivian themselves say.

Will they deliver the truck with the power tonneau working? I thought they were purposely locking it in the open position if the truck still was equipped with this option.

The red is a pretty awesome color in person.
I'm not sure, I'd have to reach out to my guide to verify. I would assume it would be locked to open though.

They are delivering it in the open position if it is broken on delivery. If it works, they leave it alone.

my September build/December delivery had the cover in the open position and working upon delivery. There was no discussion about ā€œlockingā€ it open. I use it, sparingly, as it sounds all kinds of awful lol.

Shop truck! Powered tonneau was major sell point for how I use the truck especially on road trips during winter. And it still works fine
I may be biased towards limestone too…love it

If you can wait a little while longer...stick with your config, Canyon Red is an impressive color, and while pretty much every color is a good one, that red is something special. If we hadn't gone blue red was our #2.

I think aftermarket solutions for a cover will mature as more trucks are delivered and you will probably have more options for reliable tonneaus as time progresses.

I saw this as someone who has a working powered tonneau, every time I go to use it I think to myself "this is it, this is when it gets stuck". (I have never deep cleaned nor lubed the cover)

Who says that a Red truck with a working tonneau won’t show up in the shop, your access isn’t expiring today right. Hang in there and get what you want.

FWIW as others have said, 24k miles and 9 months later my tonneau still works fine.

Funny, that’s exactly the fix I thought Rivian would come up with. A powered tonneau cover for a 4.5’ bed is overkill.
I certainly hope not, but with Rivian you never know. That would likely push me into an R1S because for my use case, I need lockable storage.

The manual cover is just as secure as the powered.
If there were pictures, videos, or any evidence of how it operates, I would be more inclined to go that route.

Trust, but verify...

I just Dropped off My R1T for some service work, the loaner has tonneau panels in various states of stuck. Was told no more powered T and probably the long term fix is to replace all powered with the manual when they break. Take it for what its worth.
How is that going to work when everyone with a powered now has paid for it?
