I’m sorry that happened. I want to be the kind of person who says, “oh that’s a bummer. But that R1 still looks amazing” and then goes on with my life. Too often, I stew in negativity.

Here’s the really positive spin: now that your “old” R1S is “all beat up” you really should go order a new Tri-motor.

Did it dent the panel or just leave the scuff? The scuff is surface and can easily be removed with some high grit polish. Even the scratch removers at the auto parts store will quickly take that away.

Being a lunk-head, I gave myself my 1st two dings: one was opening the door into one of those iron posts protecting a charging station, the other a bend in the door panel when I pushed it closed.

My wife, bless her, did not scold me, but calmly pointed out that our R1S is, after all, an adventure vehicle and my misadventures simply resulted in battle scars, and as such, add to the mystique!

My pet peeve is the wife parking the R1S (and previously her Range Rover) right next to a junker or some vehicle that likely has kids that will be climbing in and out while the wife is shopping somewhere. Particularly egregious when it's not a full lot and there's wide open parking 5 spaces further away.

Likewise, she'll happily park in front of a foot path for one of our kids sporting activities knowing that 100's of parents and kids with chairs and gear will be squeezing by.

She also has a habit of curbing a wheel HARD once a year despite having a pretty regular routine.

All of that behavior has led to scratches and dings (which she gets upset over) but she still does it. Insanity.

I got one of those also ?. She asks, but has yet to drive my R1S, because she will park in the closest spot she finds. While washing her new Tesla I find dings and scratches all over and ask her if she checks the footage and the answer is always NO, how did it get there ??‍. I always get comments when I park at the end of the lot and make everyone walk over. What are u gonna do ??‍

Sorry OP, the first cut is the deepest!

I give my family fair warning if they insist on going somewhere in my R1T (18 months of ownership, 3,500 miles on the odometer), we will be parking out in the boonies regardless of inclement weather conditions... period, non-negotiable.

A few things I have learned over time...
1) Only take your Rivian to Home Depot if whatever you need to get absolutely will not in any way, shape or form fit in or on top of another sacrificial vehicle. It's Animal Central parking at it's worst! If you don't get a dent or a scratch.. you'll at least pick up a nail or screw in a tire.
2) Never, and I mean never take your Rivian to Walmarts. For Walmarts regulars (and those living in their cars), dinging a brand new Rivian might just be the highlight of their month!
3) Do not park at the downhill end of a parking lot as all the carts idiots simply discard/push away from their vehicles after unloading eventually end up at the downhill end of the lot, and guess what eventually stops them ?

Yeah this is terrible and I'm sorry this happened to you. I try to avoid parking lots with carts for this very reason. Too many mindless shoppers and car attendants out there who have no regard for other people's property.

It's a shame but this is the world we live in.

I've probably lost a couple pounds since I picked up my R1S in December. I'm walking from spots in parking lots that are literally as far as I can get from anyone else. My alternate is to find a really well cared for vehicle out in the boonies that I assume is an employee who values his ride. I park next to him.
