Any words surrounded by quote marks in the original post was an exact quote from Rivian.
He was joking.

Given what we know today, that's how the email would have been written.

Does it really even matter if you *need* it or not? If you decide you WANT it - enough said. Who are these people telling others what they should spend their money on?
Unfortunately that seems pretty prevalent on this forum. Anytime someone mentions how a feature would be a massive welcome, others are quick to say how we're doing it wrong with wanting something else. IE Spotify being the only music streaming service with a UI.

I want a max pack, a max pack would let me drive to where I go 15+ times a year on a single charge where with my current R1T I have to stop and charge. I'm not willing to put a pre-order in for the max pack though as I don't want to be strung along, I figured I would just stick with what I have until the max packs actually start shipping and aren't a figment of my imagination. You max pack reservation holders have my condolences

I would be devastated and griping big time right now if I had stuck with a max pack. I honestly don't know what I would do, but waiting an entire extra year wouldn't be an option. Fortunately for me, my primary need for the added range went away with a move earlier this year.

My money on any upcoming info they are hinting at is it will be about the dual motor more so than the original concept of a quad motor max pack. Could be newer battery tech, or just with the improved efficiency of the dual motor there is bound to be a range increase. Will be interesting to see if it actually hits 400 miles with a battery pack much closer to the current large pack size than what would be needed for a quad motor.

Considering Edmund's recent stunt, I don't have much doubt it can sustain 11k towing capacity. I recall one of the engineers saying the 11k was a structural decision and the quad motors were capable of more. No doubt about that now.

So the next big choice I think is probably going to be more of a dual motor or quad motor. If offered a dual motor with the range and towing capability on par with the original max pack concept, how many would hold out for a quad motor? And Rivian really, really needs to find a way to give those max pack order holders a dual motor option with all other pre Mar 1 pricing.

No, I said extra. Total would be four years, but it would have already been 2.5 years. Kind of like time served on a prison sentence. :)

One thing that you could add to your list, is that many Max pack holders missed out on the opportunity/choice to get an LE as you could not get the Max pack and as there was no communication during that stage from Rivian we got kicked later down the line.

Then when it was more obvious that Rivian was going to continue to punt it and some, including myself, switched to the Large pack, there was no way to pick up our earlier place in line.
Then many early pre-order holders get to watch many that ordered years later get an LE and a much earlier delivery.

Good point.

On the other hand, something good from the delay is maybe they'll have the powered tonneau cover sorted out by the time the first max pack delivers.

Here's what max pack preorder holders have been told:
  1. 2018/2019 preorder confirmation email: "Production will begin in 2020. Fully equipped vehicles with the highest performance level and largest battery pack will enter production first. Our 180 kWh and 135 kWh packs will be available at launch with the 105 kWh to follow in 2021."
  2. Around Nov 2020 from the Range FAQ on the Rivian website: "At launch, the R1T will deliver 300+ miles. In January 2022, a 400+ mile R1T will be available."
  3. Dec 28, 2021 estimated delivery window email: "Your Adventure Package R1T estimated delivery window will be the first half of 2023." (some max pack people were told "second half of 2023")
  4. Oct 28, 2022 estimated delivery window email: "R1T Quad-Motor + Max pack deliveries are now planned to start in 2024." (switching to dual motors, which aren't yet being manufactured, has "deliveries starting in Summer 2023.")
So this is why you see "whining" (aka, legitimate complaints) from max pack preorder holders. I understand everyone has seen delays due to the pandemic and supply chain and manufacturing issues, but max pack people went from the front of the line to the very back. And the dates for the back of the line keep getting pushed back further.

Just getting that off my chest. Happy Halloween!
Thank you for laying out the time lines which describes exactly the feeling of betrayal that Rivian has completely abandoned max pack res holders.
Worse than betrayal is the the idea that they are stringing along these res holders with no real intent to deliver 4-motor max pack. They will punt and punt and at BEST offer dual motor max pack! Not the same.

I feel for you guys sticking with the Max Pack. I too was a Max Pack pre-order and was planning to stay the course until it looked like the tax benefits were going to go away. At that point, it seemed prudent (to me anyway), to drop back to the Large Pack and hope to get a truck before the end of 2022. Got lucky. I hope you guys get the truck you want and soon!

I honestly am not viewing it as a betrayal, more of an inconvenience paired with too many unanswered questions.

IF I had known I'd likely be waiting until 2024, even at the beginning of this year, I would have bought a filler vehicle. Unfortunately, every time it gets pushed, it's just far enough that I think I can make it with my current vehicle, but not so far that I bite the bullet and buy one.

I will say this, Rivian is saving the environment one max pack preorder at a time, because I'm still driving a vehicle I thought would have been replaced in November 2020 :p;)

I would be shocked if they didn't allow quad to change to dual while maintaining the old price. While it's hard for some people to believe senior Rivian management do not want to be perceived as aholes.

When you've been lied to for 4 years- that's betrayal. When you've been lied to for 1-3 years , that's an inconvenience.
