Had my tires rotated up at the Gaithersburg (Maryland) SC yesterday, along with addressing a few other minor warranty items. 5,300 miles. Figured while I was going up there for other stuff I'd pay the $60 bucks to have that done, as well. Then blew my budget buying Rivian merch from the waiting room, but that's another story. ?

Anyhow, while I was checking out the lady looked on her tablet and mentioned that my front tires were 10/32nds, and rear were 12/32nds. "Basically like new", she said. I think it's interesting that Rivian seems to be aware of some people having issues with tire wear and seems to be tracking this. I wonder if they keep histories or compile this into a database somewhere?

Besides that, good trip. Northern Virginia / DC metro traffic is a hellscape but half the distance of going south to Richmond. SC was nice. Many vehicles there. Saw a steady stream of people coming in to pick up their new trucks while I waited. Mostly S's. Everyone seemed very excited. Tech left my vehicle in Sport mode. Probably the only time it's ever been changed from "all purpose". Hit up a few wineries in the area on my way back down but that's a whoooole other story. ?

I think the Tech leaving yours in Sport was a hint to stop driving like a granny and use up those tires more quickly…

I have my 2nd appointment for Gaithersburg; dropoff on Monday.

How long was your truck there? Just for that day? I'm pretty certain I'll be dropping mine off and getting stuck with a rental :/

I had them rotate the tires, tight a loose cable going to the tailgate (note: it's still loose, but less so than before), and replace a piece of PPF on the gear tunnel door that had pollen trapped under it (was like that when I took delivery). I also asked them questions about the radio showing that Morse code message on FM stations for the past few months (no fix, other than "hopefully it'll be fixed in an OTA"), passenger airbag sensor going off (wife weighs under 110 lbs, nothing they can do besides tell her to eat a sandwich), and asked about getting grommets for the roof rack clamps (Rivian changed the design, they don't have anything that will fit).

So basically a few actual work items and me asking a bunch of dumb questions. I was there at 9:15am and out the door before 2pm. They offered a rental but I had my laptop and just worked remote from the lobby. WiFi is fast. Password is "RivGuest" (but you'll have to make a login through a website and it'll email you an account password). Might've drank all their coffee a few times. They checked on me periodically and gave me updates throughout the day.

Considering the time it takes to get there (at least for me), I would avoid the rental and just plan on spending the day if you can. Whatcha going in for?

Thanks for this. I'm in NOVA as well and due for a rotation. I've been dreading the drive down to Richmond. It was fun for pickup, but the SC is kind of in the middle of nowhere for walkable things to do. I was actually considering posting on here asking for tire places in Fairfax-ish area with Rivian experience.

All those modes are fine and good for people who get to use them. I love that they give us options. But when you live in F'ing Northern Virginia and spend hours a day just sitting in traffic, "sport mode" is lost on me.

In case I haven't mentioned it today, I hate this area. And I hate it even more now that we're in a lawsuit against the stupid City of Manassas Park that's already cost my family more than $15k. I want to burn this entire part of the country down. Hoping to get some family land in PA, at some point. That's our escape plan. ??

I’ve lived in NYC and Philly and during that time my work territory stretched down to your neck of the woods, so I know firsthand what you are dealing with traffic-wise. FWIW I’ve had mine in AP mode 99.9% of the time since pick up. I tried Sport for like 2 days, used off road once, and used snow mode last weekend during our first storm here.

I wish for better things for you and your family than fighting with the city where you live!

Are those numbers typical for you in stop and go traffic? My R1S gets some of it’s best numbers in stop and go traffic.

The only time I ever saw numbers under 1 kWh was going 85ish uphill into a 25+ mph head wind coming out of Coachella Valley.

I'll gladly welcome you to PA (I'm near Lancaster), but we don't have many chargers around so be prepared. I also simply leave it in All Purpose because any other mode, with all of the starts/stops, just doesn't make much sense.

I peeked at this thread because we picked up our R1S in Gaithersburg near the end of August and it was an easy experience (ours was right up front occupying two of their precious parking spaces). I had a whole checklist of questions that I completely forgot to ask - I sat there in awe as the tech explained everything he wanted to cover. We got home and my wife yelled at me - "What about your checklist - you didn't even ask about the crossbars!" They shipped the crossbars a week or two later, but they were indeed on my list. Oh well. Knock on wood, we haven't had a single issue with Rosey and will probably need to get the tires rotated in December (along with a PA state inspection). I think I'll try to get that done locally.

Thank you, friend. I do enjoy coming here and reading all of the amusing comments. ?

If I ever fly off the handle and start cursing wildly, it's probably either because of my city, or because I've been sitting in traffic for the last two hours and have to pee. ?

This is Hellscape, Northern Virginia. It's all stop, no go. ?

Don't wanna kill your vibe, but I get 2.5 in stop and go on the beltway daily (after it warms up). That's the best efficiency I get.

Edit: All these things are situational. I'm sure it's fine.

My previous car was a Chevy Volt and I lived in Salt Lake. (I've moved to the country.) I went through tires very quickly. I couldn't understand why some Volt owners reported little tire wear. I have a theory that the thing that makes a difference is stop and go city driving. It effects EV's more than gas cars because of the weight and more power during acceleration. I'm hoping that my Rivian tires will last a long time now that I live in the country.
