Yea, Rivian should do that too, but that is a different topic. Changing when/how the doors lock or unlock would not do anything to address the OP's concern.I think this whole issue is largely the result of Rivian breaking with the legacy model of allowing people to have something or somewhere to touch on the car which allows the vehicle to unlock if the fob/phone is present AND THE DRIVER INSTRUCTS THE VEHICLE TO OPEN BY TOUCHING OR PUSHING SOMETHING. I understand wanting to do things differently, and even saving money by omitting capacitive sensors in handles or physical buttons, but this isn’t working as many people want and expect.
So, maybe Rivian can use the existing hardware to emulate the behavior so many of us want: unlock only when a fob is close by AND I do something to indicate that unlocking is desired. I’ve seen a system used by some car dealerships where the salesperson has to have a fob or something and then they tap on the car twice to get it to unlock. I’m not sure about the specifics. If the microphone in the vehicle could be used for this type of behavior then it wouldn’t be as good as simply touching something on the handle, but it would be much better than what we have now for those of us who want more control over when the vehicle unlocks. If you have a proximity-enabled fob or PAAK and you approach the vehicle it wakes up and then starts listening. If you do a tap tap on the window it unlocks and presents the handles. When finished with a drive, maybe tapping 3 times tells it to lock.
Just a thought...
This thread is about what the handles do when the doors are already unlocked.
We don't want the handles extended but we want to be able to walk out to the vehicle and open the door while not carying a phone/fob/card.
