How? On the app it only allows you to reassign and in the vehicle there’s no option to remove. You can disable proximity but as far as I know there is no way of removing or deactivating a key other than Rivian doing it themselves.
Oops, my bad. I believe you are correct. I thought I had seen that option in vehicle menus. Now, that I revisit it, I think what I saw was the option to disable proximity locking for the fob. I actually reached out to Rivian to have my fob disabled, before I even explored the vehicle menus.

Yes, I wish the key fob was actually rated to bear weight/secure like a real carabiner.

Yeah. But once you super glue it, I think it’s plenty sturdy enough for its intended purpose. Not going to be using it on my next climb up El Capitan, but…………..

If the idea is to hang the fob externally from something like a belt loop or backpack, after gluing the Rivian carabiner closed, a setup like this would be much more secure. Anyway, lots of option, depending on use case.

It’s a real kick in the pants that the OWNER can’t delete a key fob or keycard access from the vehicle. If you lose your fob and someone picks it up and is clicking around they can obviously access your truck. That is a major security flaw and I can’t believe Rivian hasn’t addressed it yet.
This is where 'PIN to Start' would be a great feature to have...

Actually, the main point of my OP was to point out, to the unaware, the vulnerability of the Rivian carabiner, especially when hanging the fob on a belt loop, backpack, or whatever. How one chooses to solve that issue is up to them. Heck, get a darn gold plated, diamond studded case, if that’s what floats your boat. Got no problem with that ?
I almost lost my keys down a storm sewer drain when the original fob carabiner opened up. That's why I purchased the other cover. Great idea on the PSA. Sorry to hijack your post.

I appreciate your post. While I don't carry my fob often, I've noticed that the carabiner loop on my belt loop will swing open unbidden. Didn't appreciate the risk that posed until reading your post.
Oh, and thank you for not starting your post with those over-used lines, "Is it only me . . . " or "Am I the only one . . . "
Thanks for taking the time.

For reasons I won’t go into here, I use my fob a lot! I hang it on my belt loop with the carabiner. Two months ago, during the course of an “adventure” activity, it disappeared off my belt loop - never to be found again. I ultimately purchased another fob for $260 - ouch. The moral of the story is, be careful using the carabiner. It can be dislodged pretty easily. In fact, the next day after receiving my new fob, I was loading some tires into the back of my truck (swapping out the winters). I had the fob on my belt loop, which was covered by my t-shirt. After finishing my tire chore, I noticed the fob, while still hanging on my loop, had come open ? Apparently, as I was lifting the tires, the fob was forced open by contact. This made me realize how easily this could happen, without being noticed. At least, this time, I noticed it before it fell off. While one may get away with using the fob in this manner, for a long time (took me 4 months to lose it), this type of situation could happen to anybody, at any time. The carabiner, while cool, is simply not reliable!

My solution is to glue the carabiner closed. There is really no compelling reason to have that carabiner, anyway. Once the carabiner is neutralized, the fob can be attached in another more secure fashion ( some sort of hook or real guy carabiner). I purchased a nice little 8” chain on Amazon, for about $8 (actually two for $8). The chain has clamps on each end. Now, I clamp the chain to the fob carabiner loop, which no longer opens, and to my belt loop. I then drop my fob in my pocket. It should be pretty darn hard to lose it, now.

I realized this in first few days. Also, I wouldn't trust my key with that chain either. I lost one fob on my other car and that's one too many.

It is a poorly designed FOB IMHO. If they were serious about the carabiner, they would have put a screw-down locking barrel on it, like on climbing gear. I bought a 3D printed replacement cover from somewhere and love it. A bit of grip tape on the unlock button helps when it is dark or the FOB is in your pants pocket.

It won’t be hanging from that chain. It will be in my pocket. The chain is just an added, inexpensive security measure. I did like it hanging from my belt loop and may end up using some sort of legit carabiner or other connection for that purpose. We’ll see. Again, the take away from all this is to make sure to immobilize the carabiner on the fob.

Is there a problem with using a key card, or the app on your cell phone instead of this carabiner key?
Key fobs seem so ICE, so passe, so bulky. And gimmicky as well in this case.
Not being dismissive. I myself have been using my phone to operate my EVs for years (phone is bigger, sure, but it does a lot more things than just run an EV.) I carry the EV key card in my wallet as well, although never used, either. App makes everything so transparent, so hands-free, so convenient.
One thing that perhaps Rivian needs to do is improve security of its vehicles. A good start, like Tesla has done, perhaps might be establishing a PIN-to-drive feature or something similar.
Hands-free is the way to go with EV operation imo.

The key card is only useful for emergency purposes. The phone is nice, but requires one to always have it in their possession. For me, the key fob comes in really handy because I have a cellular enabled Apple Watch. The watch performs most of the functions of the phone (make and receive calls/texts/emails, listen to music/podcasts, make purchases at the store, get directions, etc., etc.) and it is always on my wrist. It’s not something I have to remember to throw in my pocket, every darn time I walk out of my house, not something I’m likely to lose. The fob takes care of activating the vehicle, in a passive way. I rarely need to putz around with it. I just need to have on me, and it‘s way smaller than a phone. Therefore, a cellular watch+a fob=a phone, for many common use cases. Obviously, sometimes, I do want to take my phone with me. But, it sure is liberating to not have to worry about having it on me and constantly digging it out of my pocket. If I’m out in my yard, in the garage, running to the store, I don’t need my phone. I just go. There is nothing to do. It’s completely seamless. My dream is to have Rivian make the Watch as a Key option available. Then, see ya fob ?

Until then, the carabiner on the fob issue needs to be addressed ✌

Lost my house key because of this junky design. The spring needs to be stronger.
