Rivian R1T R1S less than helpful battery temp yy

The screenshot on the left is what I see when charging. As soon as I stop and start driving I get the one on the right. But it's during charging that it's most useful to see the battery temp. Yes, maybe I could get it in Service mode but why not here???

I've never heard of anyone seeing the battery temp while charging. Rivian could choose to show this but for some internal reason they haven't. My guess is it would cause a lot more concern from the ownership community than is warranted.

That being said, 132 degrees is a MIGHTY hot Battery!!! Last Sunday we were driving from LA - Bay Area. The temp on the dash was 102. The hottest I saw our battery after two DCFCs was 112. I unplugged from the first DCFC and the truck immediately said preparing for fast charge - in preparation for the next charge. Two hours after the second charge we got home and the battery was down to about 80ish degrees (no battery preparation on that one).

You can see the battery temp before you start charging, which is all you really need to know.🤷🏼‍♂️

Our Gen 1 Max pack goes into limp mode (no warning) when battery temp is about 130. I use ABRP to monitor temp but it shows a somewhat lower (maybe 10 degrees) temp than the battery temp gauge does when I unplug.

Battery temp display has led to much confusion.
You really need proper training to interpret this information since it depends on many factors (ambient temp, charge and discharge recent history, current operation environment, etc).
I would depend on the car to handle the battery temp and just ignore the display.

Also good to check your battery temp on a hot day after fast charging. We pulled out of the fast charging location and lost 99% of normal available power. Rolled to a stop then checked battery temp which was red. The available power bar came up quickly and we were on our way one minute later. Max pack battery

So ABRP can see the data but RIvian can’t display it on it’s own screen

It used to display it but a software update changed that at some point. Unless my old brain is misremembering which is totally possible

I see 112 when I get into my truck to leave work. Ah the joys of 116-120F days in Phoenix.
They must be fast charging in very high heat. I've seen in the 120s charging overnight at home. I had to install a garage purge fan to keep the garage cool enough overnight so that my charger doesn't overheat and drop down to 1A

Well, ABRP is Rivian. Rivian owns it. I guess you could think of it as how Rivian chooses to let those more in tune to engineering details like yourself get at it.

The problem with showing battery temperature is that no one knows what is normal/expected and what is not.

IMO it was a bad decision to add the battery temperature display in the first place, because all anyone does is complain about it.

I remember when this was first added via a monthly software OTA update.
Within a month, there was a thread from a couple who saw the battery temperature reach the "orange" range - they promptly ditched their Rivian on the highway, on an overpass, and had their Rivian towed more than a hundred (?) miles to the service center. All because of a normal and expected temperature (never got in the red ...).

It is these sorts of unfortunately predictable overreactions to normal conditions that argue against making any of this information available to the end user. That one incident probably cost Rivian thousands of dollars. And it cost that couple a day of their time and having to get a hotel/rental to continue their drive home then recover their Rivian some time later.

So if Rivian doesn't want to show you the battery temperature under certain conditions, I trust their choice. The software will tell me if there's a problem with battery temperature, just like every other car ever built will give you an indication if it overheats.

I often watch battery temperature when charging speed doesn't matter.

When charging speed DOES matter, I let the vehicle worry about battery temperature.

Best to all!

If you link with abrp it shows battery temp, even while charging.

This is the way indeed. In this case, I think anyone that has any common sense will look at the values in ABRP and not be concerned. Joe Blow new to EV's sitting there at a charging screen that shows the battery steadily increasing in temperature, sounds like a CS nightmare.
