With hunting season coming up, and many of us going out long distance and/or staying there for a week or two (hello vampire drain keep me up at night worry), knowing ways to add charge in a pinch is getting to be important for some of us.

My 6kW Genmax (GM6000iED) works as long as I don't try to go over 20A. 22A and it starts surging and eventually dies. Haven't tried it on propane yet (dual fuel), figure I might have to drop it down in amperage a touch.

240V, so charging at 5kW, 7.5 miles per hour.

Anyone else?

What adapter do you use for the 4 prong locking outlet to the nema 14-50 plug? Thanks! I saved this generator on my wishlist to pick up when I get my R1S.

I have considered stuffing some LG batteries from battery hookup in the floor of my trailer along with an inverter/charge controller and putting some solar panels on the roof. Figure I could get 15-20 kWh, an inverter, and maybe some inexpensive panels to trickle charge the batteries for about 5k.

On the generator, it says that neutral is bonded to the frame (ground), which is important for some chargers. I'm not sure if that's typical of inverter generators, or just how this one was implemented.

Can you explain how you would go over 20A? Is there an option on the generator to control the output or is this an input control on the Rivian? Thanks

Cars request the charge rate, so in the Rivian.

L2 EVSEs tell the car how much is available and the car controls the rate of charge. There's no "request" involved.

I have a Champion 9200 watt generator with a NEMA 14-50 plug on it. I have tried to charge my R1T on it several times; each time adjusting the amps lower and lower and it still won't charge!? I can use the 120v regular plug fine but not the 240v NEMA 14-50 plug. The truck attempts to charge, then shuts off, then tries again, then shuts off. Does this about 5 times before I get the "unplug and try again" message. Anybody else having this issue?

That's not an inverter generator. I'm surprised that the 120V plug worked, honestly. The power out from a non-inverter generator is usually so nasty that most electronics won't accept it / get damaged by it. They're meant for power tools, lights, welders, etc. So, that Champion is probably just not going to work. Maybe they put some extra conditioning electronics on the 120V to clean it up so that people don't keep complaining that their laptop charger fried when hooked up to it, which was a fairly common occurrence for a while there.

Actually, I tried the 120v again today and it did not work either. So, I think I was confusing another attempt with another champion generator that I have. It’s much smaller and it is an inverter. The 120 V worked. I think you’re correct, an inverter generator is the only way these vehicles will except a charge. Why can’t Rivian just tell us that? I’ve asked them so many times and still no response. Instead, they just told me to ground my current generator properly and it should work. It did not work. Shocking… Lol no pun intended.

Have you successfully charged a vehicle with an inverter generator?

Yea, I think at the start I posted the inverter generator I used.

I also used a small champion inverter one too. I tried using the parallel kit with the two small ones, and that didn't work. But I think that I could've futzed with the grounding and made it work if I had some more stuff with me, but aren't positive.

Oh ok, I see you mentioned using the GenMax 6000 but couldn't go over 22A? Correct? So, were you using the 14-50 240v plug and it just would do it or was it on a different plug or circuit? You mentioned an adapter. I ask because I got to get a generator solution as my house is off grid and the solar has limitations...especially when its cloudy.

The Onan 3.6kw propane generator in my travel trailer will charge the R1T at 120v/12amps.

Yea, basically the 4-prong to NEMA 14-50 adapter, then set the limit in the truck when I plugged in.

22Amps max was at 5500' elevation. At 9000' elevation, anything above 16A was too much for the generator.
