We have some damage on the tailgate of our 2025 R1S from backing into a partially open garage door (don't ask how ).

There's a dent and some scratches, all limited to the piano-black plastic trim at the top of the tailgate. See pictures.

Curious how we should go about repairing this? Is our best bet to just create a ticket with Rivian Service and have them come back with an estimate and an appointment (likely months out)?

Or are there any body shops/chains we should approach directly?

Is going through insurance even worth it for this repair?

Any guesses what this will cost to repair?

Would much appreciate any suggestions or experiences folks can share!

PS: I tried, it isn't buffing right out 😄

Ah man, sorry to hear that! Those black trims show everything, so I can imagine how frustrating that must be. I’d say starting with Rivian Service is still your safest bet, even if it takes a while — at least you'll get an official assessment.

In the meantime, you might want to call a couple of local shops and see if any have worked on Rivians or similar EVs before. Some of them are surprisingly good with cosmetic repairs like this and may even order the part directly.

Insurance could be hit or miss — totally depends on your deductible and how picky your provider is. If it’s mostly cosmetic, and you can live with it for a bit, maybe hold off and wait on Rivian's quote before deciding.

Let us know how it turns out!

Today, my wife just did the same exact thing on her R1S. Hit the garage door and has very similar damage. I’m thinking take it to a body shop, get it bondo’d and smoothed and sanded. Then just get it wrapped all black on top. Seems like a simple fix.
What ended up being your solution?

I did the same thing to a Forester years ago, as I was getting ready to sell it :headbang:.

I bought the part from the Subaru dealer across the street and get a local body shop to paint and replace the piece. Looked great.
