Love the CD case. Shows how old I am...the youngsters on this forum will likely be scratching their heads.

Not trolling. I should have screen capped the chat log and posted it here. But as you said, "in production" could mean anything, or Ashley the customer service rep just says that to get folks like me to stop asking...

I will believe this when I see it. No one else has ever confirmed even hearing of a Max pack test vehicle. Plus I'm not aware of anyone with a max pack having a 2022 window.

Most likely scenarios:
1) you are trolling us
2) "in production" is Rivian-speak for we just built our first max pack test mule and a non-employee might see one in 2024
Rivian has been testing max pack trucks for ages. In one of the max pack threads someone figured out a truck shown in one of rivianā€˜s website stories was in fact a max pack, based on range shown on the display and some of the destinations mentioned, which wouldn’t be reachable with the standard battery.

after all, there’s no outward indication an R1T has the bigger battery.

I’d bet they’re starting to run some max pack trucks off the line in small batches.
they may even be customer vehicles at this point. Production now could well be underway for trucks that are set to deliver at the start of 2023.

TL;DR: it’s probably happening. Just very, very slowly.

I sure hope you and jznd400 are right!! That would be awesome. I guess we will find out in general tomorrow what details we will be getting at the end of October.

Really it only makes sense. Given initial stated plan was to build max pack first, it ought to be ready to go.
Iā€˜ll be a 24 hour drive from rivian’s first/only for a while service centre in my entire country. So I’m not expecting my max pack R1T anytime soon, probably not even by the 2nd half 2023 estimate I got at end of last year. But maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.

I can't imagine Rivian cancelling max pack after estimating delivery dates.

While supply chain issues have certainly hit production in multiple industries these days, from my perspective it really looks like (outside of growing pains) for a brand new vehicle, once Rivian has got things going, they've hit most of their dates. This equates to good project management. I have no doubt the max pack will come out, just a matter of when testing is complete.

Well, we got our emails and, based on my limited reading comprehension capabilities, we MAY know more by the end of the month.
It almost seems to me like, if they were going to cancel max pack, they would have by now. What are they waiting for?
That said, it could also be that the market is evolving. 4 Years ago, or whenever they started taking Preorders, a 400 mile range was enormous. Maybe industry leading even. But now, PoleStar(my favorite made-up company name) Ford, MBZ and Porsche have all-electrics with big ranges, as do so many others. 400 mile range doesn’t stand out now like it used to. Rivian has already come out with the Regular Pack, if they abandon the Max Pack they could easily be seen by consumers and potential investors as going backward, when they seem to want their brand to be seen as a company that is forward-looking.
Okay, I’m talking myself into it: they are building them now and they are going to follow through with their 2023 delivery windows. That will be the perfect thing to feature wherein their new delivery screen comes on-line.

Actually, might be able to use my Infrared camera to tell the difference from a standard and max pack from underneath the trucks... maybe I'll go drive around the service center lot when I go to pick my truck up and snap some IR photos.

I think the strategy changed to prioritize large pack first for production run to maximize volume delivery for R1T and now R1S to meet expectations. Once the preorder volume goes down by next year and volume quotas met, with less material source constraints for batteries, i think that's when the max pack deliveries will happen.

I think and hope that the max pack is still a go. If they were going to cancel it they probably would have done it when they cancelled the explore trim. I guess we will see at the end of October (or November or December....)

I agree with this. I think that end of October they’ll be announcing the newer (not quite Max) pack for the R1S, call it the Explore Pack? Ha!

I’m guessing it’s not quite the 180mWh capacity of the R1T given the form-factor challenges.

I’m hoping the rumors of a new 800V standard & motor design are true, but I’m not betting on it.

I do think that one way or another when Rivian gives updates on the Max Pack for the R1T they are going to have to give more info on maximum capacity for the R1S form-factor.

I’m banking on the fact that my reservation is so far back in the queue that I can bide my time before pulling the trigger on R1T max pack or R1S; the wait might even be long enough for them to announce their next vehicle(s). If Rivian announces a bronco/wrangler smaller form-factor crawler vehicle but with 300+ capacity, I’ll switch my reservation to that vehicle & wait for it, whether it’s on R2 platform or R1 platform. IMO 300mi. is sufficient for a smaller vehicle.

But if it’s the R1S or R1T for me, I absolutely must make full use of all of the packaging space: I love how Rivian has been super efficient in packaging components (like lowering the radiator to make more space for the frunk, that tiny space for the Tonneau cover storage, etc.) & so I want my battery capacity to make the most of the available frame/underseat space.

I'm always on the lookout for news regarding upcoming EV vehicles, so I don't know how I missed something like this.

I can't find news of an EV from Ford or Porsche offering a vehicle with anything approaching a 400 mile range.

Does Porsche even have a vehicle that can get 300 miles?

I feel that Rivian would only announce a larger pack for the R1S as a demand stimulator or if they are sure they are not battery constrained. A two row max pack R1S should work fine technically.

The only unannounced change I expect from Rivian is 800V capable architecture, which they would probably have had at launch if parts were available.

Bit of course they will add as many add-on options as possible

A fair question that I must admit I was relying on some fuzzy advertising recollections for most of my post, but after a little digging I found this from a couple months ago from edmunds
https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/top-ten-long-range-evs.html
Rivian is on the list (as are Porsche and Ford) but at the top are Lucid and Mercedes. If the Max Pack ever hits the streets it will jump Rivian to #2 or #3 on the list I would think. That would be good for future sales and investors alike. Where I live, 400+mile range is essential if I ever want to leave town.
