The mobile service technician said that my pads were worn and the rotors were scored, a job for which I would have to drive to Colorado Springs a day away and pay nearly $2000 to fix. I almost never touched the brakes because I rely carefully on regenerative breaking, so. I took it to my old mechanic who showed me very clearly that there was at least a quarter inch and actually more left on the pads.

I feel really angry and betrayed about this, because now I know I cannot trust the Rivian service system. Given that it is so expensive I feel really trapped.

Umm, what? Brakes wear down on the Rivian, regardless of regen braking, with a lot of mileage, particularly the front passenger ones. I’m having mobile do mine tomorrow (80k miles), without going to an SC and it’s going to be like $200. Did you get an actual work estimate for $2000?

Happened with my sister's Tesla by a mobile tech saying they couldn't rotate the tires because they're bald. She brought it to the Tesla SC and they said nope you're fine.

I've had Rivian mobile techs replace my back windshield wiper because I knew it would break if I did it. They broke it while swapping it out which made me laugh. Rivian called me and said oh they will replace it on good faith and I'm like what? You guys are the ones who broke it so you should replace it. Different Mobile tech shows up the following week with a winshield wiper blade only lol Had to come back the following week with all the components to do it properly. About to put in a call for a tire rotation on mine again and hopefully all goes smooth but it seems like a lot of rookies show up. They tyupically bring 2 guys and 1 is training which I get, you have to start somewhere.

BTW I'm hardly touch the brakes either except for now since the cold snap negates regen completely. Not looking forward to the $2k bill for that either and I never use the blended brake setting.

Any time I read “blah blah blah LIED to me” I’m out. No lie service might have been mistaken, but that’s not a lie.

if your brakes stop working, are you going to come back and say your mechanic lied to you as well?

I'd love to see the invoice on this... I couldn't even get a pad replacement on a 2004 Civic for that little.

Edit: Unless you meant only the front passenger brake?

Yes, just the one, Zach, our New England mobile tech has one on hand to show folks that at least Gen1 Quads tend to wear down on the same brake in the same place.

Your pads and rotors will wear even if you didn’t use them. Has happed twice to us, once on a bolt and once on a Mach-e. They get frozen and worn for non-use. The problem we have is we can’t turn off regen braking which is what ford and Chevy both told us to do once in a while to make sure they don’t get bad.
maybe this isn’t your problem here but ours can go bad and need to be replaced without us using them.

Default regen uses brake assist so if you didn't turn it off your Rivian is using the brakes even if you aren't pressing the brake pedal.

Quarter inch minimum left may or may not be OK. Honestly, I would have to see the surface of the pad to give my opinion on the matter. If there are some deep grooves, I would say to change them. My guess is the technician decided to be conservative with their opinion.

I always treat the fronts as a set and the rears as a set. So if I see only one pad of the 4 fronts is worn bad for example, I will still change all four pads(and fix the reason why they are not wearing evenly).

I have never paid someone to do a brake service so I don't know what the going rate is, but $2k seems like a lot.

Whining about cost of a brake job on a premium vehicle costing how much? Must not have owned any vehicles costing this much or this heavy. You lied to yourself about what you were getting yourself into when you made decision to own one. This isn't reddit. Get this slop outta here.

The $2 grand must be pads and calipers and disc rotate, the pads alone if no other wear exists is a couple hundred. Details matter. The amount of required brake pad in thickness is listed in the shop manual. Such things are not judgment, they are math. Also the balance of wear is listed as an allowable delta. While opinions on a social media thread are plenty, facts are required even if facts require measurement and spelling out in detail.

Twice now, service techs have checked off all the items on the "complementary inspection" and didn't do it at all. Is that a lie?

I think so, so they do lie.

My service center took in my truck because it bricked. They said I have a nail in a tire. $190. It wasn't there when I brought it in and this service center has lots of construction around it.

I sold my Rivian a few months ago since owning it since launch. One of the reasons oh got rid of it was because of the terrible service.
