SO, weather has finally turned cold for us here in Buffalo. It was 7deg when I left the house this morning, 9deg yesterday morning. Was a balmy 25deg when I left the ski slopes Sunday afternoon.

The truck has decided that I don't need heat while driving. No idea what I've done, or if it's a software thing, or what is happening. If the truck is moving, it blow cold air. I mean, cold. Not cool, not lukewarm. Straight COLD air. It will preheat itself in the morning from mid 30's in the garage to teh 68deg setpoint. It will blow air for the first 2-3mi of my 25mi commute. Then it blow COLD air until I get to the office and sit for about 2 min. Then the warm air starts again.

I did a hard reset last night. Soft reset at the office this morning. No change.
Swapped driver profiles between my wife and I. No change.
I've tried damn near every setting combination I can think of while driving. No change.

Why won't it heat while I'm moving, but works great while sitting still? have a 100mi drive this afternoon and I would prefer to not wear a parka for the 2hrs or so it'll take. Anyone have any good ideas this side of starting my 13th service ticket in 14mo?

I experienced something similar this morning. In my case, most of the active air vents were blowing over the windshield and side windows. The ones that normally point at me were closed as the system was set to auto climate. The cold windshield managed to cool the air from warm to cold by the time it got to me. After opening the other air vents the situation improved.
Did you check which air vents are open?

We 100% Billieve you. Before anyone here can answer i think we need a picture of your climate page while driving. Gives us the full picture.

Here is mine this morning.

Yours could easily be a software issue but without seeing this screen we can't know.

Ironically yesterday my truck was blowing *hot* air whist the temp was set to LO (35f outside, started with 68f climate setting and moved to LO after the cabin became unco hot): ended up having to turn it off and cracking a window. Seems something’s off with the current software release as there have been a few reports of climate oddities. (my climate screen showed LO, and blue air streams - though even after 5-10 mins it was still blasting hot air).

I see what you did there :D Love it!

This was sitting in the parking lot after driving in. Ambient temps were below 15 in both pictures.

Auto set to OFF. All vents OFF except the two driver side dash vents. Recirc ON. Sync ON. Rear vents (floor and console OFF). Fan set to HIGH (7). Temp set to "HI" (should that be "High"???)

Two vents that were open were blowing obviously COLD air. Soft Reset didn't fix anything. After sitting for another 5min or so, hot air returned.

I had this configuration yesterday, with same results. This ones a little blurry because I was actively driving (well ADAS was driving) when I snapped the pic.

Found some reddit threads from a few years ago about a bug with the rear floor vents having to be on for the truck to generate heat. Is that still a thing?

It's really weird to me that it seems to work while sitting still. Heats in the garage in the morning on schedule, and is noticeably "warm" inside. Preheats for the commute home just fine. After a few minutes of driving (3-5 miles or so) it acts like it's lost it's mind and starts blowing cold air with no change to settings. Just driving along, and I can FEEL the temperature of the moving air change from toasty warm to chilling cold. It's super annoying and my wife is gonna be pissed if I make this drive tonight without heat. Hell, might leave the Rivian at home and take her Rogue (ugh) if it does this on the commute home.

Also, @massgas I thought it was just the cold windshield making the air cold before it got to my face. Nope, cold air coming out of all available vents.

What happens when you have the "auto" control activated and temp set to your liking?

Same thing.

That's how I had it this morning on the way in. Drove fine for3-5miles then started blowing cold air.

Is it possible that something is "freezing up" as I'm driving through the bitter cold air? Doesn't make a ton of sense to me, assuming there is antifreeze in the cooling/heating loop. Also doesn't make any sense if the heaters in the 1st gen trucks are resistive and just need an electrical signal. Feels like a bug in software that's new.

Another quick data point. Had to run a quick errand a few seconds ago. Truck has cold soaked since 7am this morning (about 3hrs). I set the HVAC as shown below. Drove 2miles away, went through a drive thru, and drove back. Truck pulled the temp up to 68 as indicated and continued to blow relatively warm air for the entire ride (maybe 10min in the truck).

I've actually had two hvac issues with my gen 1 R1T. One was that it became unresponsive (wouldn't turn on) when the interior cab temp reached above 40*C (104F), the other issue is what you are experiencing. It would start out fine then suddenly switch to cold air and there was nothing I could do to get it to work expect to put it into Park. Once in Park, it would start blowing hot air again.

I took it to the service center and even though they couldn't replicate the issue, they did replace the thermal management control (TCM) module. This didn't fix the overheating issue but it did seem to fix the 'blowing cold air in the middle of winter' issue. The overheating issue has also been fixed but was a more extensive fix by replacing the central gateway module, vehicle dynamics module and a harness.

I would start by submitting a ticket. If they can get a good diagnostic on the issue, they'll be able to fix it. If they can't get a diagnostic or replicate the issue, ask them to replace the TCM module.

Known (to me at least since Feb 2023) software issue. When you are in the vehicle, make sure the rear floor heat is on …that will cause the software to use hot air all around…..

Seems like a software issue or an issue with what vents are on. If its blowing cold air with whatever vents you have on try turning the defrost button on to red and see if that makes it start blowing hot air again.

I am down in the twin tiers and had a equally cold morning but had a hot ass truck.

Not everything can be blamed on software. The issue described is not the same as the software issue. Don't put off getting this fixed properly. I've experienced it and it sucks when the cab drops below freezing while you're driving with nothing but the heated seats to keep you warm.

I'm guessing sensor related issue. There must be something funky going on with how it's reading the cabin temps, just not sure why not driving resolves the issue.

I'm going to experiment with this one to see if I can replicate the issue. If indeed it's been there for some time, I've never noticed, but I almost always have the floor vents running.

Try the set point at 72deg or higher. My 22R1T had this issue in the past. Anything below 72 would blow cold. Also, if I try closing back vents the truck hates me and blows cooler air. If I leave back vents on, it is happy. Who knows why...
