The answer to your question may be in the e-mail that was sent out today.

" Did you know every time you plug in a Rivian charger, that vehicle charge is powered by 100% renewable energy sources, like solar or wind?."

It would appear they want to have all their chargers connected to green sources. Perhaps in areas where they have to work a bit harder to make this happen, it takes longer to swing a deal for the green electricity.
Texas actually has some of the highest percentage of renewables but it is probably an issue of not being able to be billed specifically off that portion of the mix, because that sounds like it would involve regulation and Texas hates that kind of thing.

Because ERCOT is busy trying to just keep the rolling blackouts to a minimum. Power is TX is not that great as is and any progress will be painstakingly slow. It also sounds like RJ is focused on the West cost, the East coast and maybe one of these years TX.

I believe the most recent interview with RJ he specifically answered why. California first, east coast next, then connecting in between. It makes business sense, but being in Texas myself, I feel your pain.

San Antonio's municipally owned electricity provider CPS has both solar https://www.cpsenergy.com/en/about-us/programs-services/energy-generation/solar-power.html and Wind https://www.cpsenergy.com/en/about-us/programs-services/energy-generation/wind/windtricity.html purchase programs. I don't think renewable energy availability is the issue for the San Antonio location. Either waiting on equipment or the location to become a priority. Must be the same for the service center here that is also coming "sOOn".

I see the "coming soon" icon in San Antonio for awhile now. Don't really know what the hold up is.

This is really disappointing all things considered. I was just in Texas for a few weeks and it seemed like every Buccees that I stopped at had a dozen Tesla chargers. That's a win win for Tesla and Buccees because it's a great place to stop for 20-30 mins.

Considering that Texas is a top 3 state for Rivian sales volume and the majority of that volume is likely concentrated on the I-35 corridor, it's pretty disappointing that they can't even get one RAN station. I feel pretty confident that I'll never get to use a RAN charger while they are still free.

Texas has issues with winterizing their natural gas power plants.

And wind farms operate successfully in winter in much more northerly states - and countries.

That’s because most Texas wind farms didn’t buy the heating/winter package. They didn’t think they needed it. And most days they don’t. They also had a large nuclear unit trip during their last big blackout. My understanding is the ERCOT electricity market doesn’t have penalties for generators that don’t perform when needed, they just don’t get to make as much money as those that do perform well.

How is it that Texas is second only to California in Rivians on the road, and yet, there is not one Rivian network charger in the whole state? Why is Rivian dissing us? What say, Rivian?
just drive to Michigan if you want to use RAN.

I'm only sortof kinding but yes I am not happy with the RAN being places people don't need it.

There’s a Rivian waypoint charger at the Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Oklahoma, 87 miles from me. Mobile tech was at my house a few weeks ago and I mentioned that to him; he said Rivian sponsors that preserve and gave them (or sold at a discount) a couple of R1Ts for use on the preserve and installed the charger there for their Rivians, but the charger is available for use by visitors to the preserve.
