Official: R2 & R1 Crossbars NOT compatible / interchangeable (Rivian confirmation statement)

Rivian officially confirmed today that "the cargo crossbars are not interchangeable between R1 and R2."

I assume those accessories are more universal and should fit on both.

Screams like a money grab to me if they changed the mounting system. I can understand if R1 bars didn't fit due to length. Sucks for anyone that will own both vehicles but not much different than most other brands but really throws the whole "sustainability" marketing out the window.

I seriously doubt this was a money grab. Much more likely there are issues with the original design and/or it can be simplified and this is a natural time to do an incompatible update. One thing I don’t like about the R1 crossbars is that they extend/shrink to fit the truck bed or roof. This is great if you have a the T but if you have the R1S you have a large area in the middle with no T slot. Hoping this is removed or reduced with the R2.

Does anyone actually know why the crossbars are not compatible with the new R2S?

The consensus here is that it's because R2 is too narrow for the current crossbars, but we won't know for sure until someone gets hands-on.
