OG res holder, downgrade to dual?

I just popped into the configurator for fun and noticed I was offered to "downgrade" to dual performance for $500 savings. I'm torn here. Obviously sticker price now I'm getting a better "deal" on the quad. But I'm not sure if that will transfer to better resale/value. 3.5 vs 3.0 seconds is trivial. Dual gets more range. Quad may end up being abandoned since its an outside purchase(Bosch)?

What are others leaning towards? Tank turn is gone. Aside from HP/TQ they're the same car correct? I can't see a big reason to go quad aside from the "deal".

In this case I can not see any benefit to going dual assuming the same pack size. The range is no better than quad/conserve. I was only 10% shy of 350 range on 20" in the mountains.
The warranty is shorter, less of almost everything, resale almost for sure lower, I don't see the upside.
They have eluded to a future quad but I assume it will be in-house.

The Elephant in the room is that the highest risk of long term support isn't from Bosch, it is from Rivian.

The DM is excellent and allows Rivian to keep costs lower. For folks who plan to be on road the majority of the time the DM is probably the better choice due to cost..

With that said and in your scenario I would go with the quad from monetary perspective. The MSRP of quad is higher so resale value should be higher for quad than for DM. Difference in EPA range is less than 10%.... significant yes...but not huge. Quad is better off road as there is more control.

I don't think the quad will go away, it's just much higher cost than their in house DM. The off road capability is the big sell for Rivian so that's why I think quad is going to stay around. I do think quad will sell in lower numbers due to increased cost though.

I debated on waiting for dual or going quad and I would recommend the same.

My reasoning was higher resale value of quad motor in the future, known Bosch reliability, minimal loss of range which only affects long drives over 300 miles.

As far as Bosch reliability I think the enduro motors will be reliable and have been tested in the Amazon Vans but those are driven differently than how most people will drive and there isn't as much long term data on them or the disconnect components.

Last I really think they will increase the price of the Quad as they ramp up production of the Dual motors. The Quad is a lot more expensive due to the extra 2 motors and buying from Bosch I think they will raise the price because of that and to get more people into the Enduro vehicles where there is more profit. This is my opinion and I know others might disagree but I think Rivian's goal will be 90% dual and 10% quad.

I am sticking with quad for the extra year of warranty, plus the additional drive modes. And $500 did not seem like enough to sway me. $2500 would have made me reconsider.

For a $500 saving, I would stick with the QUAD. You put it in CONSERVE mode, you got your dual mode.

When Tesla opens their chargers and we get the NACS adapters (next year I hope), you won't have to worry about range. Right now, on our R1T in conserve mode with a 90% charge, we get 300 miles, to me the $500 savings to get maybe 50+ miles isn't worth it.

A lot of people here have made good points.

I think that no matter which way you go, you will be doing the right thing.

I think the real opportunity costs come down to exactly 2 things (in my opinion):
1- Is the extra range and efficiency worth it to you? IE: 350-ish miles in the dual motor versus 320-ish in the quad. The dual is lighter. There's a really good breakdown that was posted on this forum on Munro Live's YouTube channel regarding performance, efficiency, friction, and drive architecture. It's pretty enlightening.

2- Warranty. Quad gets an extra year. This alone is worth thousands. But not if you don't need it. I'd suggest look at your current driving habits to glean this one. If you're putting all of 5k miles on your vehicle yearly, then I don't see a real advantage here. If you're putting 20k miles or more on your vehicle, I think the quad warranty is obvious. If you're somewhere in between, then use the sliding scale.

Since the price difference is only $500, I really don't see any reasons TO go with the dual. You get the same range as if you had quads in conserve. You get less of a warranty. You get brand new motors from a brand new company as opposed to Bosch motors that have been around a while from a company that has been a round for even longer. You get less performance. You get less re-sale value. etc etc...

Also with software updates, early Teslas were cut off at a certain point. Will Bosch Rivians be similar?

I have a 2015 Model S (pre-facelift), it is still supported. I was still getting software updates, albeit not often, before I upgraded to MCU1. Tesla still supports everything drive wise. Rivian has sold enough quad motors with the current motors that I'm confident they will support them over their lifetime.

The model Tesla largely walked away from was the roadster but they sold less than 2500.

1. better warranty
2. relatively proved stability.
