Not saying you didn't do it—but I've not seen it mentioned—you and your husband did step on the brake when attempting to shift into gear out of park?

In cases of failure, lost of drive would have been accompanied by fault warning indicators. But, none are mentioned.
No warning at all. No fault warning. Rivian believes it’s an electrical issue.

I'm a bit confused by what's going on here. A video might be helpful. LIke, when you open the door and sit down, does the vehicle act like it's detected your presence? When you pull on the "shifter" to put it into drive, does it respond at all? Doors lock, etc.?

If you try to use YouTube or Chromecast, do those work? E.g., vehicle operates normally in "park", it just won't shift into "drive" or "reverse"?
Hi . Just won’t shift. That’s the only issue.

This is certainly frustrating. I have no ideas beyond what others here have suggested. Weren't computers supposed to make our lives easier?

For some levity, this reminds me of an old joke:

A chemist, mechanic, and software engineer got into their electrician friend's new car on a cold evening, but it would not start.
That's weird, the electrician said, I know the battery's good.
The chemist asked if he had run out of gas, "Nope, just filled it up" his friend told him.
"Is your starter good," asked the mechanic. Yes, it was.
Everyone looked at the software engineer. "I dunno," he said, "maybe if we all get out and get back in again."

Love this - "maybe if we all get out and get back in again."
This is literally what Rivian tells us to do... get out, wait 45 minutes, and try again.

lol

The rub is this shouldn't be a thing.

We went decades, nearly a century, without having to do various kinds of resets on vehicles. We created solutions to a set of problems that never existed.
Sure but they were largely mechanical things. Now everything is electrified, cars, washers, phones, TVs, etc and it's not abnormal to have to restart things.

I’m not sure I agree that it is abnormal to restart things that are mostly software driven.

My Tesla, iPad, iPhone, laptop, security DVR, router, smart TV, and Rivian all seem to benefit from an occasional reboot.

I agree. It's just odd that we've come to accept it as "normal" now when reboots, resets, restarts, etc. weren't a thing not that long ago.

Stuff. Just. Worked.

And if it didn't, mechanical or electrical troubleshooting wasn't all that hard. Is it really progress if you have to reboot a dishwasher? Or your TV? or your car?

Hard to say needing to learn three kinds of resets to use your vehicle is human progress. BTW, get a different vehicle and learn different reset procedures. Don't get me wrong, I love my Rivian - it's my 6th EV - but it's finicky.

BTW, My 2008 Honda Pilot? coming up on 18 years without a reset or reboot. I'm not even sure there is a procedure, let alone multiple methods to reset. It does have a double-DIN Apple Carplay head unit I installed years back. No reboots or resets on that either, kudos to Pioneer I suppose.

I disagree that stuff just worked. Cars could barely go 100k miles without significant work even in the 90s. I think it's much better now that we have to reboot but can expect a car to last 200k+ miles.

Abnormal? Every time you shut off and turn back on a ICE, a computer, a tablet or phone, you are in effect reseting. You've been resetting devices all your life and you took it for granted.
