Agree it's bad. If you say anything negative about Rivian, suggest features, improvements, changes, etc, you'll get chewed up by the Rivian forum "regulars". It's interesting to see the upvotes for their defensive posts rack up as other regulars join in to support Rivian. The level of immaturity and Rivian protectionism here can be excessive. Some people just don't understand that criticism is what drives improvement. Suggestions/complaints may not fix our vehicles but it will improve future iterations of Rivian's new models.

As to the OP's suggestion, Rivian desperately needs an OPTION for owners to automatically cool the vehicle down in hot conditions. I've seen the temp approach 130 degrees in my R1S when it's only 83 degrees outside. Things left inside the vehicle (NOT in direct sunlight) like lip balm turn into liquid. This never happened in my Lightning or Tesla. This isn't just a convenience feature, that extreme heat can't possibly be good for all the internal components and finishes in the cabin. At the very least there should be a ventilation fan that kicks on when the temp reaches 110 degrees. No compressor is needed and the electricity consumption can't be much... maybe 100-200 watts or so. My vehicle is losing 2-3% of charge a day just being parked. If Rivian allocated that parasitic energy loss to running a small fan I wouldn't mind the loss.
I have melted gummy bears and chapstick in my Tesla with cabin overheat protection on if they were sitting out in the sun I really don’t think it’s needed. I think most of you operate your car ac like the a/c in your house which is why it never cools down. Just put it on LO It was 95 yesterday and I turned on my R1T to cool it down and it was 45 when I got in it. My R1T cools faster then my 23’ Tesla M3P.

Wait, is that an option?
Oddly yes. It’s an Easter egg. I forget how to activate it, but it replaced your navigation map with mars terrain. Quite useless, but my kids liked it about as much as the fart sound. Note that I am not requesting Rivian adopt these bored-programmer options. They’re gimmicky.

Setting the thermostat to 70 should cool the cabin to 70. That is not an unreasonable expectation. Every vehicle I have owned or ridden in since the early 1990's has had a functioning thermostat where if you set the temperature to 70 it would cool or heat the cabin to 70.

If Rivian's AC only works when set to HI or LOW that is a huge problem. On/Off and a 1-5 fan control might have been ok 40 years ago, but it absolutely is not acceptable today and hasn't been for a really long time.

Why can’t my Rivian prevent the internal cabin temp from going over 90(?)F? All my Teslas had this simple feature. Yes it can drain the battery, so we should have the option to turn it on or off. I don’t always remember to pre-condition the cabin before going to it. I chose the light seats, so that’s helpful, but it routinely gets over 100F inside the cabin and summer has only just begun…
I posted proof that you don’t need overheat protection on the post coldest ac ever. You can see the Rivian cooling down much faster than the Tesla. I took screen shots of temp and Time because people just complain about the ac and provide now proof. Well I provided proof. Tesla with over heat protection on at 100 took longer to cool down the. Rivian at 120.

Only if you remember to precondition the vehicle… ??‍♂

I'm just realizing that you aren't referencing a Rivian vehicle. It isn't something I want added to the R1T for the same reason that Steve Jobs (RIP) banned easter eggs from the MacOS. It can unintentionally mess up other, important things.

I always thought that Tesla adding that feature admitted they potentially had issues with their components not being able to withstand high heat. As it turns out, both my 2016 X and 2017 S had the glue used in the instrument panel go bad, even on the S where I had cabin protection on, it just took longer to happen.
I had both the Model 3 and the Y. Never had a glue issue, but I loved having both cabin overheat protection as an option and climate keep. Not sure why Rivian has neither. Seems like an easy feature to program. The best they have done is to create a pet mode which I use to keep the climate control on in hot or cold weather when I leave the car but need it to stay cool/warm

I think it is very reasonable given that Palm Springs was 124 deg. today....

I always asked the same question to the Tesla people and never get an answer.

Did you also run the AC all day when you owned an ICE vehicle? If no, why are you so concerned with running the AC all day in an EV?

I just noticed the "fans running to protect displays" notice at 136F! (should've screen captured but didn't. Instead I vented windows.) Not sure what the temp for protecting components is, but that seemed pretty darn hot.

This is it … 91 and 136 is big difference though.

I thought cabin overheat was primarily a safety feature in case a child was accidentally left in the car, or a pet was left in the car and the owner forgot to turn on dog/pet comfort mode.
It doesn't run the fans until the interior temp hits 135-140, so I don't think that is good enough protection for a human occupant or pet.

I'd like a feature where it cracks windows (as you can do manually now) but if cameras detect people nearby, it automatically rolls them up, and lowers them again when the people leave.

Got the 140 degree temp warning on the app yesterday while the wife has the R1S in Palm Springs (104 yesterday). It ran the fans but only said it got it down to 133.
Requested she park in the shade whenever possible (good practice anyway).
