Well, we're in the middle of a heat wave. Been setting the truck to "precool" before I leave the house or the office. Appears Rivian doesn't know how a thermostat works. Getting some pretty ridiculously cold temps. Glad the A/C is working, but this is absurd. Anyone else seeing this?

Current Status. It's been cooling for about 15min now. Current ambient temp is 89degF with a heat index of 106degF. It's not Arizona heat, but it's toasty for Buffalo.

Got in the truck this morning and even the vents thought they should've been blowing warm air.

Of all the shit that doesn't work right on this truck, at least the A/C isn't on that list. I'm not going to have service touch it either. They're find some way to screw it up and make the heat the only thing that works or some similar BS.

Feels like a "mission failed successfully" type scenario.

I wish. As soon as the temps hit 95+ for me, it struggles to keep up and/or takes a good 20 minutes until it's comfortable inside and never, in my experience, approaches "cold" inside thereafter.

Judging by your screenshot, it's only 77 outside where you are -- perhaps that's the difference.

91 when I walked out. Truck set to 70, app reporting 61 in the truck.

Such a weird problem to have.

The auto setting is very aggressive I have found. My AC is very cold. I use auto to get it cold, then turn it off when I get in the truck, just leave it on LO with a low fan speed.

The auto setting on mine is perfect. I leave it at 73 almost all the time. On occasion if I’ve done something that makes me hot, I’ll use the vent memory to blow it at me temporarily. It’s funny though, last weekend a friend was visiting from New York and when I left him alone in the car for a short time, I came back to find it all set to the ultra low full cooling setting. You people.

Sometimes it will just turn the fan all the way down for no reason at all. It’s still 90 in the cabin.

Sometimes when temp is reached it just blow cold anyway, just to mess with me.

The graphic shows the vents red when cooling and blue when heating.

It’s a mess, a beautiful one, but a mess.

The HVAC has always been a bit wonky to me.

In Pet Mode, the cabin is consistently much cooler than the temperature I've set.

The AC also behaves oddly almost every day. After startup, the fan will sometimes randomly slow down when it should be running at full speed to cool the cabin as quickly as possible. More recently, I've been getting in the vehicle and finding the HVAC turned completely off, so I have to manually turn it back on.

The heating system, on the other hand, seems much more dialed in. I rarely experience any of these issues during the winter months.

I think that's on purpose, and I believe I've seen something where it sets it cooler and tells you. The Tesla did also.

I do currently have a bug where if I'm on an AC charger and remote start the air conditioner, it won't actually cool, just blow air. This happened long ago, it was fixed, and then came back. Idiots.

AC is significantly under powered if you ask me!! We are in the mid 90’s and takes the trick 20+ mins to get down to 72. Thought it might be my truck so scheduled a test drive in R1T and it had same issue.

I guess it's the humidity? Mine is very nice in three minutes even when it's 100 outside, and chilly in 5.

In auto mode it's the worst HVAC system I've ever seen in a vehicle. Sometimes it will turn off the compressor the first instant it hits the setpoint and will proceed to blow unchilled air at me. Other times it will continue blowing super chilled air for 10+ minutes after reaching the setpoint. It's impossible to predict what is going to happen.

And for me it's the first that I've ever just left on auto with no change unless I'm particularly hot. Have you tried a full reset (disco reboot with the flasher button)? Also, I've had to reset/calibrate the vents twice in a couple years.

Weird. Just picked up my new R1T and I was going to say the polar opposite. Seems like the strongest AC I’ve had to date. Perhaps a bit overzealous like the OP stated. Add the cooling seats and I can make it an ice box in a hurry. I do have a windshield sunshade too, perhaps that’s helping.

I don't think the problem with Rivian's HVAC is inability to cool sufficiently when placed on LO, or inability to heat sufficiently when on HI. Both of these seem to work fine to either make the car an icebox or a hotbox.

The problem is trying to get the Rivian HVAC to regulate to some normal temperature(say ~70F). That's where it struggles mightily. And heaven forbid if you ever turn off sync mode - all bets are off on what the system will do there.
