Major game changer, and the ONLY reason I considered trading the Tesla for a Rivian.

I've never seen a Supercharger outage, or even a single broken station, in years of usage.

The latest posts are misguided - and I have had a Tesla S from the beginning - still do - after thousand and thousands and thousands of miles I have only found 1 (ONE) Tesla supercharger not working, bent pin, the rest of them at that stop worked just fine. The Tesla supercharger network opening to Rivian is absolutely WONDERFUL - no more range anxiety! This adapter did NOT get hot and it was 82 degrees out! This will NOT work with home chargers made by whoever. Putting wet anything on an electrical device is stupid IMHO!!

I think they meant damp, not dripping wet. Unless the plug is cracked and weather seals compromised, it should be safe. However, what is not visible to the eye is... well, not visible. Better to not assume. And if for sake of handling a hot plug, better to just keep a pair of heat resistant mechanic's/work gloves handy on the vehicle anyway, for this and other uses. Charging curve will tapper towards end of charging cycle anyway and keeping plug and adapter cooler isn't going to shorten session significantly. Personally, I'd just let it be. But, to each his own.

I have the A2Z, works fine, but gets hot and slows charging. This seems to happen even to actual Teslas, and a wet towel helps.

Hey! Thank you for trusting us. The adapter should not be in cause for the derating, during our most recent tests, we did expose the adapter to 500amps continuously for 1 hour and surface+internal temperature were within range of Supercharger's DC pin temperature limits - most importantly with UL2252's specifications. We have been informed that even with Tesla's Tesla Superchargers handles tend to get hot and that is in cause with the derating you have noticed. The towel trick has been first shared by Tesla owners as there is indeed a derating issue due to the Tesla/NACS plug. We are 100% confident our adapter does not cause derating until the second temperature sensor switch achieves a specific temperature that then sends a signal through resistance value and voltage value to the EVSE and vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I will point out just for fun that there is a RAN station in Madras.. so you would have saved ~0.15/kWh.

Granted I guess you were just testing your new adapter but what team are you on ?

Welp, didn’t mean to cause a fuss….. but since I have - we need a few definitions: What temperature is “hot”? What temperature is “warm”? I’m an engineer and will take my temperature measurement gear on my next trips and do a few tests - both on the Tesla plug on a Tesla and the Lectron adapter and Tesla plug on my R1T.

JUST FOR THE RECORD - I have NEVER felt a Tesla plug get “hot“, which until further defined with specifics, I would define as too hot to remove from the vehicle with my bare 74 hear old hand.

FURTHER for the record - putting anything damp, wet, moist on these plugs and adapters is stupid. And certainly not a UL approved part or procedure - there might be a good reason for that! ?

The NACS specification doesn't set a maximum current that plugs/outlets are required to support. Instead, it specifies a maximum temperature (105C). It's a interesting tradeoff, allowing a variety of implementations/materials/cooling systems, but it does lead to some non-deterministic behavior. For example limiting power from one pedestal when the sun is shining directly on the handle vs the adjacent pedestal which might be in the shade.

Yep used the RAN charger in Madras many times! The RAN system is great and so is the Tesla system - now I can go almost anywhere with no range anxiety Because I can use either!

LOL! So you think nobody is able to charge when it's raining? And who has submitted this to UL to get turned down? No, there's no good reason for that and you're just making shit up.

Sorry, I should have worded it differently and will go update it.

I saw the charge rate plummeting for no apparent reason, touched the adapter, and it was hot. This was in Tucson, mid day, hot as hell. I poured water on the adapter and the charge rate went up. But I cannot say that the adapter itself caused it, and didn't mean to.

It has real-world problems just like other charging networks, and has real non-negligible downtimes just like other charging networks. (Read about how Tesla defines "uptime" for the supercharger network, for example - using that definition EA also has about a 100% "uptime".)
Please take your meds, the reliability of EA is nowhere near that of Superchargers.

A2Z yesterday. Love the SC network. EA and Chargepoint and EVGO are dead to me. LoL.

Basically discount anyone's post that says the Tesla network is not good. It means they haven't used it extensively. I have used it for over 5 years now and been to every corner of the country and have yet to show up to a Supercharger and not been able to get a charge.

Serious question: is there some way to tell the route planner which networks to ignore / use? The network selection on the nave does not seem to translate to the route planner.

I’d totally agree. Driving my 5th Tesla…..seldom any problem though some locations have gotten very popular and I’ve had to wait as much as 15-20 minutes for a vacant stall. Once or twice out of literally hundreds of visits I’ve encountered a non-functioning unit.
