I live in Ventura County and travel to Upland once a month. I have 22” on conserve mode and go about 70ish. I say 250 isn’t far off. I also just got carpool stickers so I’m hoping that may help. Let me know if you have any questions.

is there a limit to how much you can charge 100%? I figure there’s probably two or three days a week that I have long enough drives that I would go to 100%. But I’m a little confused as I get mixed information on if it’s OK to charge to 100% without damaging the battery.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
and that’s not charging to 100%? That’s the other concern I have is charging to 100%…. Tesla said not to do that unless you’re on the occasional road trip. I could technically charge to 100% to meet my needs three or four times a week lol
I was seeing 350+ miles on the 21” wheels using conserve on the highway without breaking a sweat.

We did a road trip on those wheels/tires up the coast in the twisties and made it with plenty to spare after 326 miles.

Not to say you’ll have the same experience, but it’s totally doable. And worst case, you can always grab a charger for a few minutes to break up the drive and give you the added buffer.

Charging to 100% is fine if you plan to use it relatively soon. Do not STORE the vehicle at 100% for any significant length of time (days - not minutes)

If you need 100%, charge it to 100% and use it. The chemistry is unhappy with charging to 100% and leaving it there for extended periods, but you won’t see any meaningfully negative impacts from charging to max and setting out.

when I do that trip , I do charge to 100%, mostly because this is my first EV and I haven’t had the truck that long. Now that I’ve done this drive, I think 90% should be fine. I normally do 80-20 charge status. Also I do not have the AC on so I wonder how that will hit the mileage. Since my drive is 101/134/210, I do have a lot of fast chargers, but very pricey. So I do my charging at home when I can. Not sure the expensive price of the Max battery will make it worth it.

That’s the main thing I wanted to hear. Good to know.

Large pack, quad motor.

Personally - If I had the max/dual, I wouldn’t be remotely worried given your parameters.

I have the large pack quad, and I originally had the 21's. I got closer to 350 miles out of a charge on the freeway going 75 or under in conserve. I don't think there will be any problem with the range for your use case. I understand why you're hesitant because Tesla overstates their range by a significant margin. In my experience of owning my truck for a year and a half, Rivian doesn't play range games, and their stated range is close to what you can expect. Most of the time, I exceeded the stated range.

The other thing you will get over your Y is comfort. My R1T is the best highway car I've ever had. The seats and cabin are very comfortable for a cross-country road trip, let alone daily driving. The truck handles well and is very composed on the expressway. I have told people on this forum many times I don't think the truck will fit them for their use case, but in this instance, I think this truck is more or less made for what you want it to do.

R1T large pack quad with 21” here… and I agree with all that’s been said so far. I just took a 4600 mile road trip in December and used conserve a majority of the trip. It exceeded my expectations. In fact, I would highlight how the Rivian trip planner was too conservative most of the time. It always made the distance even when the planner advised Ishould stop to top up.

R1T R1T R1T….

Not sure how these forums work… so forgive me if this is NOT the intention of this system…

The Set up: I have hovered my finger over the ‘order’ button a few times now.. to pull the trigger on an RT1. I work in sales and on the road 200-250 miles in a day (on my heavy days) but really averaging around 150 miles a day and counting in my 2018 model three (185k and climbing). Needless to say, I’m hitting the supercharger on the road far too often as i do not have the range I would like. I DO have a home charger…

Sold my F150 work truck and I want the Rt1 with all the advantages I get with the quad motors when playing in the woods (Oregon Boy) … but I’m told the MAX PACK for the quad motor will be a thing… at a ‘later date’…. And dropping 100k on a truck.. i want to do this right.

THE QUESTION(s):
1: If most of my time is highway miles, and i swap the truck into Conserve mode… is 200 REAL drive miles (SoCal located) a realistic thing? Or should I hold out for this MAX PACK QUAD (when ever that is) or is the whole argument stupid and just go with the dual with the max pack.

2: Is the Quad Max Pack a real thing and worth holding out for?

3: I’m reading that Rivian is swapping to Lithium battery system ‘in 2024’ - is this a thing now and how do we feel about the battery swap?

I need a 250k mile truck…. I’m hoping this is the solution.

Thanks in advance and happy charging…
As others here have noted, 2022 R1T with 21s. Very easily get over 300 mi on Conserve mode. I charge to 70 percent everyday. On Conserve mode, the range estimate is 249 miles - at 70% SOC. Re: the max pack, based on the YT channels I’ve watched, it doesn’t seem like max pack is worth it. LOVE THIS TRUCK

I drive the Palm Springs to OC route regularly to visit my parents. R1S. Conserve mode, 21s, medium height suspension. The latter is to avoid the tire wear. I consistently shows 330+ miles range.
I find the biggest influence to range is driving speed. Want better mileage? Slow down. 65 will get you even better range. 85 is costly to maintain.

If you want the most range, and the most capable vehicle off-road, don't go with the quad. I too have a place in Oregon, and the quad on the off camber ice and snow up there was a mess.

I sold the quad and now have the dual motor Enduro, and it is a far better off-roader, in addition to being more efficient and having greater range.

FWIW.

You've gotten lots of feedback saying 300 miles w/21" and it can be done.

That said, in SoCal freeways, where the average speed is 75~80 (when moving), it is unlikely to get 300+ miles from 100% charge. 250 should not be an issue though.

The actual range is so use-case dependent. How much load is carried, how fast and kind of drives, driving style and so on.

In conserve mode, there definitely is a difference in range. I know what you're saying about Model 3 range expected versus actual. Rivian is better in this regards. Still less but not as much.

For now, quad max pack is a mirage. May happen, may not happen but if dual max pack real world range gains are similar, then it won't be worth the extra cost, I believe.

The current battery is Li-ion and the rumor is for standard packs they will use Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry battery. The chemistry is lower cost and more robust than Li-ion, but has lower energy density so for the same weight battery pack, results in lower range.

Battery swap is very expensive (battery is the most costly element of EVs), so forget the idea and get a new vehicle.
