Question on RAN chargers

Hi all,
Up until this past weekend, I have never DC fast charged the truck before. We were out of state for a quick ride when the combination of less range than I'd prefer and the opportunity to try a RAN charger while on our way home.
I plugged in, but rec. a error message twice before I called the folks at Rivian. While waiting on hold, I had a idea to add my visa debit in addition to my AMEX to the Rivian account.

And that worked! The nice lady I spoke to, didn't seem to understand why my AMEX would have been a problem. I used it a couple months back when I ordered the tonneau cover from Rivian.

Anyone else ever run into this?

My wife being used to how slowly I charge at home , was quite pleased with the RAN speed!

Not sure on AMEX. Sometimes cards have additional security on them that requires you to verify a transaction etc. before it will allow it to go through if you have never used that merchant before or if it is in a different location. If you really want to find out maybe check with Amex and see if they can see an attempt to run it.

I agree! The RAN sites are very well maintained...at least the ones I have stopped at.

I’ve got the corp AMEX card for my VERY infrequent work travel, so not too familiar with the alerts and such that they support. On my other cards, I get emails, text messages, and/or app notifications when a charge is declined.

Sounds like the preauthorization was declined by AMEX, and when you contact them, they should be able to tell you why. I sort of remember a RAN station doing a $20 preauth on the card at the beginning of the charging session. Do you see those on your AMEX card?

My phone will show me alerts for charges etc. I didn't get anything. Only msg was on the charger saying that there was a failure.

I'll call them tomorrow and find out.

For what it's worth, when adding my Credit Card for the first time in the app, my Visa failed but my Mastercard went through (different banks also). I agree that different security settings my impact this behavior

Yesterday, when I got the pop-up notification in the truck to subscribe to Connect+ (Trial ended), I did it, but it showed my CC on file as having very much the wrong expiration date.

Went through anyway. So ... ?

Although stormbreaker would suggest otherwise, I'm pretty darned careful/frugal. I only carry the AMEX and have my debit card. I don't expect to use RAN very often, I normally charge at home or work. So maybe I'll just keep the debit as the backup card on file.

How long have you had your AMEX?
Wondering if perhaps it is learning your spending habits.
I use mine for anything and everything, and have never had any issues with it.

Completed my first road trip over the weekend (while towing 5,000lbs pulling a SXS on a flat bed that acted like a big wind sock) averaging 0.8 mi/kWh.

250 miles each way- so had to stop three times to DC fast charge each way. 5 Tesla stops, 1 RAN stop in total.

I'll take Tesla superchargers every time over the RAN. RAN was slower to ramp up and had a lower top speed. On the plus side, it was completely empty (I was the only one charging) and I got to use the pull-through charger which was nice pulling my long trailer.

I did sign up for the Tesla membership which made the per kWh cost about the same.

RAN should max out whatever your truck is asking for assuming there are nothing other trucks plugged into the same cabinet and doing power sharing.
