Just because it’s listed in the gear shop doesn’t mean it’s only available after the fact.

Yes, our Q7 didn't include one, our GLS450 did include it....honestly, I barely ever use it and never actually bought it for the Audi. The MB has a nifty storage spot for it just next to the spare tire so I keep it there in case we decide we want to use it.
ok so luxury brands dont come with them but non-luxury brands do? go figure.

I always thought of it as an overpriced extra for most cars, although my prior SUV's were bought used, so I don't have a personal data point.

But with the frunk, I don't see it as necessary. Just put anything you want hidden from view in there.
I had originally wondered why they didn't offer a rear cargo cover, then I thought to myself that I could hide anything I needed to in the frunk, so maybe it was one of those accessories that was a relic of the past. I do tend to use cargo covers. But with the frunk, I'm hoping I won't need one.

Volvo used to include the cargo cover, but now it's an extra accessory cost. It's just how the industry has gone.

People who don't want them, don't want to pay for them, and the manufacturer wants to be able to keep as much profit at a given price point.

We've paid for them over the years on various SUV's, but never once used them. There must be three in our garage that I can't even identify which vehicle they belonged to.

Higher quality hotels all make you pay extra for WiFi (admittedly this is less of a thing now, but it's still a thing at many of them) because they know the people looking to stay there are concerned about the "experience" and not saving $8 a night on a $485 nightly rate. Cheap hotels all offer free WiFi because it gives the impression of value when the cost of WiFi could be 8-10% of the nightly rate.

Some people care about value, some people care about experience (I'm not making a judgement - I value both) but this is how the world works - each brand knows what their audience wants to see and prices and markets to them accordingly.

If anything, this comes pretty close to showing that sheet goods don't fit in a R1S.

Total Width at the widest point is 4.3Ft (4' 3.6"). Assuming the 3.6" is needed to engage in the slots to lock it in place, that's 4' exact.
There is clearly a taper to the shape to fit the contour of the rear opening, which would mean that at that z location, there is less than 4' of opening.
Then, at the floor level, you've got the the latches for the tailgate which would take up more space.

Not definitive proof, but close enough for me to answer the question of whether sheet goods would fit or not.

This 100%. I've had many SUV's over the past 25 years and almost all of them this was a paid item. Often it's an accessory ordered by the dealer and you'll see a line item on the window sticker. Sometimes it's part of a package.
Same with my GX 460. You only got the cargo cover if you ordered the preferred accessory package. I believe it was bundled with a cargo area net and cargo area floor mat.

Just because other companies do it doesn’t make it right. Especially for a company eschewing a lot of what existing auto companies do (for good and for worse).
You always pay for it, it is either charged extra or baked into the base price.

I for one would rather have to pay extra if I wanted it. I’ve had a couple of Tahoes and a couple of Grand Cherokees, usually one of the first things I do is take the covers out and store them in the garage never to be touched again.

This is the same for cross bars on roof racks, most companies charge extra for them now because most people do not need/want them. Just a simple way to try controlling cost. If a company sales a million vehicles and they can eliminate a $100 dollars in cost per vehicle to an individual that seems petty but to a company they just saved $100 million.

One thing it does tell us, is how much space there is for storage in the rear area, 2nd row fully back with 3rd either up or down.

My JGC came with one (I'm sure I paid somewhere in the hidden paperwork) - but that being said - can we get a USEFUL one. If all I wanted was privacy, I'd 100% tint all the rear windows.

Can they make one that is load bearing so you can stack stuff on top while having stuff "stored" below. Now that I'd buy.

It would need to come with a cage to separate the passenger compartment. If you get into a collision whatever is stacked there will become a head seeking missile.

Besides helping to hide stuff, these covers are supposed to reduce the noise level coming from the cargo area (potentially more so than hide content as everybody knows that something is underneath it).
I think they’re useful in hatchbacks and more of an annoyance in SUVs.

Did you read this somewhere or did someone actually publish the db reduction from any soft cargo cover?

There is no way a roll up soft cargo cover is going lower sounds by any perceivable level to human ear when the sound waves can travel out of sides and propagate from the cover material.
