Sadly, I don’t think owning three Rivians, each with serious service issues, is actually an outlier. Keep working on the trolling, though. Nothing comes without practice.

I am thankful this immediate and silent failure didn’t occur while I was in the backcountry. That would have been really bad.

Trolling?
" I assume this is a 12V battery failure, something I've never had in 25 years of car ownership (across about seventeen cars)"

Just quoting what YOU said. Your very own words!
I am not an English linguist, but I surmise what you said speaks for itself, i.e., that you never had a 12 V battery failure. I kindly ask you to stop shooting the messenger and perhaps learn a most basic sense of understanding of what words (your own) mean instead. Basic English 101.

I still encourage you to reach out to Guinness; you are onto something here.

I’m going to go out on a limb there and say that the trolling wasn’t referring to your shock and amusement at no battery failures in 25 years, but the bit about reaching out to Guinness. Amazingly enough, you added it a second time in this mildly confusing response.

I cant tell whether you’re mad that the OP hasn’t had any prior 12v failures or if it’s because they were (rightfully) complaining about how interruptive it is when it happens in a Rivian.

Personally I just took it as a good reminder to be ready for that and maybe even check my 12v health myself.

We had a 12v failure (with notice) on the '23 at about the 8000 mi mark. Rivian mobile service had it done pretty quickly for us.

It was a little frustrating seeing the gyrations to get it done: service tech couldn't get a jump to power up the 12v enough to open the frunk: had to start disassembling fender wells and access to get the frunk open... then remove all the plastic and the frunk liner.

Agree with a lot of others here: 12v batt failures are typically an easy swap on most vehicles - I need to check but feel like they may have moved the location on the Gen2?

It’s under the front passenger seat, which IMO is kind of nuts. I get that design is difficult, but I would have taken less frunk storage and had it up front, assuming easier access than both what gen1 and 2 have.

I’ve definitely torn apart my fair share of cars and despite the inconvenience of taking out what I imagine is a pretty heavy front seat, there’s the second issue that I’m not sure whether it’s true, but a battery swap needs to be “calibrated,” whatever that actually means. I imagine using Rivian tech tools to do something (professionally I also work on software so this part, if true, is also superficially nuts).

I love the R1T but god, this design around a service part :)

Thanks - thought they moved it.

On the '23 the tech definitely had to tweak something with his laptop.

Sure miss the days when someone would figure out the button/ignition sequence to reset the service lights!

Update: my R1T is back from service. The problem was a failed charger which took out the 12V batteries on its way out. I filed a service ticket for a buzzing sound when charging, but my service center is so backed up it went months without an appointment. I noticed the buzzing only once, and the car makes so many odd sounds it’s hard to tell how seriously to take it.

This makes me feel a tiny bit better as this type of issue probably requires a charging event to brick, so unlikely in the backcountry. Others have reported 12V batteries failing with no warning, though, so I’m still skeptical of using the Rivian for remote wilderness adventures. A normal car would have a backup key one can use to at least get into the car on electrical failure, but Rivian cheaped out here.

Service lately has been awesome (when you can get in; it’s usually a wait of months). It won’t last after the R2 launches, just like Tesla’s didn’t last, but for now I am very appreciative.

For all you apologist for the pisspoor 12V design(mobile service fixed it) it will be 800$ after 36K. I love my R1S but RJ is tone deaf or something, My rant over., bring on yours,

We had our Gen 1 Launch Edition R1S brick in our driveway while we were out of town and my mom was staying at our place watching our kids. She parked it and then the next morning it was dead and completely unresponsive. Rivian sent out a tow truck driver who picked the door open somehow to get some personal items out and then set up up a service tow for a few days later to Miami (2 hours away). When I got home I tried trickle charging through the emergency hookup with no luck. It was hard to get the emergency hook up to even power up enough to let the doors unlock.

We had about 31k miles on a little over a year old R1S with who knows what other problems could pop up so I decided to trade it in on a Gen 2 R1S right before my second reservation expired in September. At least we'll have warranty coverage for another 36k miles. With the amount of issues experienced, I can't see owning one without a warranty. It was a $1200 tow just to get it to the service center.

If you still have a Gen1 you need to proactively get the 12v batteries replaced before it dies on you at an extremely inconvenient time or location.

I’m a big fan of the lithium low voltage batteries. Tesla implementation has a disconnect if the lithium battery drops below 10%. Rivian needs to work on an easier way to jump these trucks.
