R2 Drive Modes Explained (What They Do), Including Conserve Mode

Which drive modes have front axle disconnect during cruise? And does the front axle reconnect to provide more regen when you lift off the accelerator?

All-Purpose and Conserve switch to RWD while cruising. I have not watched to see if it reconnects for regen, but I don't think I've ever really maxed out the regen capabilities (ie even with hard regen deceleration, I haven't noticed the meters on the wheel gauges fill up).

Maybe it should be called the “EV learner mode”.. as the acceleration in an EV is something most ppl are NOT used to.

I use the slower mode in EVs to temper my lead foot when i have guests in my car.

Otherwise, my car stays in "Insane" mode...bad range and all

Didn't the Conserve mode on R1 cause premature tire wear on the front wheels?

Only if you were stupid...I often used conserve mode on long trips and got more than 48K on my original 20" OEM Pirelli's. Conserve mode was meant to be used while cruising for periods of time at a constant pace and you needed to switch back to All Purpose when you were exiting an interstate or hitting stop & go traffic. It was never intended to be used around town with stops and starts. I was really happy when an update a couple months ago allowed you to change drive modes while cruise was enabled. Before that my usual process was:

• Engage the cruise control when I was up to speed on the interstate
• Curse because I forgot to put it in Conserve mode
• Disengage the cruise control
• Switch to Conserve mode
• Re-engage cruise control

I'm surprised it is not RWD-only vs All-Purpose AWD, but I guess that would leave the same question of what it means on the Standard RWD.

When I test drove an R2, I brought up the screen that shows the power being sent to each wheel. I put it in Conserve mode and drove a bit and it was indeed all RWD. But, when I gunned it, the front clutch engaged and it became AWD.

I think that's the intended behavior, but other modes might also do this (all-purpose?), limiting Conserve's actual advantages.

After the first month of driving like a 16 yo on a thrill ride with our first Tesla, I thought about the cost of insurance and tires along with possible tickets, so started dampening my driving by using Chill mode 90% of the time. I will occasionally use standard mode when I need too but I find my old neck doesn't appreciate being snapped back so much. My passengers also don't seem to get car sick as fast either when in Chill mode and when I look at the speed on the screen and see the word "Chill", it helps my tendency toward road rage to remain in check. I'm hoping Conserve mode will work like Chill mode does for me now...lol.

I'm looking into getting the R2 because my current car makes me drive like a hooligan.

Plus i'm getting older and would like to not fall into my seats getting in.

agree. The ride height seemed nice when I got in it during my 1st (& only so far) demo drive.

Re. Conserve Mode: my current EV, a 2015 E-Golf, has 3 modes - Normal, Eco , & Eco+.

• Each Eco mode imposes a speed, hp, & torque limit.
• That said, a speed set on the cruise control at higher than the speed limiter of the mode will remain in effect until you turn it off or brake.
• Eco+ also turns off the a/c, leaving only forced (fan driven) ventilation

I have found Eco+ helpful on going to the extreme ranges in the E-Golf. I’ve also found it frustrating since the acceleration sux in that mode.

I am not advocating for Rivian to copy Volkswagen, but maybe a few more tweaks to speed, space air conditioning, etc. might squeak out a few more miles within Conserve mode in the future in order to make it more meaningful/viable.

Test drove it. Its fun for sure and has room too! Model 3 Performance in on another level though and I know the limits of that car pretty well. I even tracked one on the Nurburgring. I'm done with all that though and want practicality and speed now. The Model Y Performance just doesn't do it for me. I was much more excited when i was driving the R2.
