R2 Roof Sun Shade

Ceramic tints are fine on side windows. They're not structural and have room to expand. Plus they're oriented vertically so they don't get direct exposure from overhead midday sun.

I have had ceramic tints on all my cars for years. I would absolutely not live in Phoenix without it.

In Denver you need a moon roof sun screen / shade. The car temp will be very high. Any after market product to buy?

I would check out makers of the same for the R1 vehicles and expect them to have something soon.

Ceramic films are just regular tints. You can get them as mostly clear if you want. But I have 70% on all my car windows and it's great at blocking heat.

The problem is that they work by absorbing heat. And by putting it on structural glass pointing straight up at the sun, the glass can get too hot and shatter. This has happened to multiple people. So ceramic tints are not really appropriate for roof glass.

Thanks, that makes sense. It seems like it needs to be a reflective tint to avoid heating the glass.

I did my first test drive in an R2 today in Salt Lake City. It was sunny and 101 at the time of my drive and there was noticeable and uncomfortable heat coming through the glass roof. Not a deal breaker, but this is definitely something that will have to be addressed with an after market solution.

Chatted w/ local Xpel guy about this - he said not to go darker than 50% on a panoramic sunroof. So my plan when the time comes is XR+ 55.

There's all kind of discussion re: warranty implications. At the very least, I'd say if you do sunroof stick to an installer that's provided via the Rivian x Xpel website hop.

I plan to go clear ceramic IR and UV filtering. I like having the interior light provided by the roof but want to reduce heat. Whatever you do make sure it blocks IR as that is what makes you feel hot.

Rivian will more than likely have a sun shade in the gear shop for R2. They just released them for R1 I believe.

3M offers a 90, and Llumar offers a 90 and 80. Both 90s appear borderline-clear to a layman.

Just precondition the car before you start it to cool it down.

This topic came up a lot when the R1 first came out and it's a legitimate concern. I love my R1 but hate the glass roof. A week after I got the car, I had ceramic installed on all the windows including the windshield. The installer refused to install anything on the roof. He has been installing tint on my cars for about 15 years so I trust him. The initial install made a big difference. I then found sun shades for the roof and use them in the summer. That has helped even more. 100 degree weather the last few days and the car is very normal.

Does that reflect or block the IR? If it blocks, it will get hot. I worry about the glass cracking.

I had 3M tint installed on my car some time ago at "certified" 3m installer, they also don't install ANY tint on sunroof for some reason, I'm not sure why Xpel offers roof tint for r2 if you choose them from rivian gear website, maybe they apply it outside ?
The screenshot is from Rivian's website, not even XPEL. It seems they consider it safe, maybe due to the glass design or something else.
