If you road trip a rivian r2 and a model Y I think the R2 would lose. The charging is the same on both vehicles but the tesla has more stations.
Model Y is more efficient. That is where it would catch and pass a R2 on a long road trip. We have to keep in mind, the Model 3 and Y is now 10 year old technology. The R2 tech is going to age quickly. Everyone has already been complaining about Tesla not advancing their battery tech quick enough. So comparing the R2 to an aging platform isn't ideal.
For most people an 8 hr road trip is enough, and your car can do most of those miles one one charge.
I am a glutton for punishment. Use to do 800mile road trip in one day in a Lyriq(1600mile round trip). Summer was always a joy, turning on hvac would kill charging speeds. Every stop was a sweat fest.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, I do believe it is a little bit overstated though. Ubiquitous 800v chargers are still a few years away, probably by 2030 they will match or exceed all of the 400v chargers we have today. Walmart, IONNA, Rivian, MB, Tesla V4, are all building out the 800v network. We definitely have some around today for sure but you can't just pull over and know it's an 800v charger; you have to seek them out.

So we need that first. Then comes the cars need to all be 800v. Well same as the chargers situation we have some today but not a lot - BMW, Volvo, Hyundai, Porsche, etc. - not exactly mainstream America. That will also take a few more years before Rivian and Tesla switch over. I imagine Tesla is reluctant too until they build out a bunch more true V4 stations that can do 800v. Rivian will move over to 800v in their next gen R1 that desperately needs it bc they have such big batteries and then R2 maybe will follow in its refresh after that in 3 years.

Slowly but surely things change but it isn't overnight. We are 3-4 years away at best by my estimation. So even if that does happen by 2030, what do we lose with R2 in its current state? 5 minutes, maybe 10 minutes of charging time? Not really a huge deal unless you're just a massive road tripper doing thousands of miles often.

Efficiency generally does not matter because the less efficient EV should ideally have the same range from a larger pack

A larger pack would generally not charge slower because the C-rate would be the same

The place that you do take a hit is the case of rivian only maxing at 225kW vs tesla 250 but it's not for very long

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
For me it's charging time. When we do trips, we charge 3 or so times a day, then once overnight or before bed depending on whether the hotel has charging or not. If my charging stops are 40 minutes, but they could be 20 minutes, that's an hour a day saved. We recently did a 5,400+ mile trip over nearly 4 weeks, charging over 40 times. If I saved 15 minutes per charging session, over 40 sessions I saved 10 hours. THAT is what I am interested in, not whether my 30 minutes stop is now 27 minutes.
Where are you driving to? The US is approximately 3,000 miles across. Roundtrip coast-to-coast travel?

Wow! That’s quite a trek. Hopefully you didn’t do it recently and run into all of that wildfire smoke.
Nope. It was in March, skiing.

That's the crux of @OutofSpecKyle's "10% challenge" series. https://outofspecstudios.com/10-challenge
  • Start at 10%, with preconditioning going.
  • Charge for 15 minutes.
  • Drive at 80 MPH until it drops to 10% again.
  • Record distance driven.
I'd like to see one at 70 MPH, too, since there's plenty of the country that 80 MPH simply isn't feasible, but 80 MPH is what they're using.
Now that they have moved their base of operations to NC, I wonder if they can still do the 80 mph thing.

I think they move around..they are in Europe, mid-west still, I have the feeling with the R2 they will get one or use one out in CO where all the other tests were done

It will probably be one of their biggest most watched videos of the past 1-2 years I think.

We've all fallen victim to Microslop (rule #1 of the AI era, co-pilot is not really ai).

Worth comparing if the R2 data gets sorted are these two competitors.

I'm not sure I'd call either of those a proper competitor to

Oh, I'm sure they'll violate NC's speed limit the same way they violated CO's.

Kyle posted this video today of the new Model Y Performance. I can’t believe how bad it is. It’s far worse than any of the graphs I posted on page 1. He charged for 15 min at a V4 supercharger and only went from 10% to 51%. Now that is VERY bad.

maybe it would help if you or anyone else actually posted graphs that show the SOC vs. time?

If you skip to the end you see the important result which is 105 miles of range in 15 minutes. not bad

I watched the entire video. No one is arguing Model Y isn’t an egg with an efficient aero shape for highway driving. It’s awful at charging. Both are true.

you're clearly not getting it. Charging performance is related to range and c-rate

Tesla achieves a decent road tripping performance here by having, good efficiency, and therefore delivering a good range. The charging performance comes from range, not efficiency

Rivian has large battery packs with R1 (to deliver good range) but the road tripping performance is still bad

A rivian R2 has a much larger battery pack than a model Y to deliver a similar range and again the efficiency does not matter since they properly sized the battery pack
