Whenever I back out of my garage I get the message that cross-traffic warning is unavailable. If I am already out of the garage I don't see that warning. Has anyoe seen this before?

I see this frequently when I first power up my R1S. It usually goes away after a few seconds and/or I don't see it every time. I chalk it up to one of various bugs that comes and goes away. I've had it tell me the auto-highbeams are unavailable (since fixed with an update) that the surround sensors are not working (also fixed with an update), random messages that the trailer brake controller and trailer lights are not working (haven't seen that one in a while and I've never even taken the hitch cover off, let alone hooked up a trailer). I also see "gear guard unavailable, storage device disconnected" pretty regularly when I first start the vehicle up in the morning.

This is normal behavior. For the first 15-20 seconds after waking from sleep the sensors are unavailable. So if you are the kind of person that's in the seat and reversing within 20 seconds you'll see that.

I am generally pretty quick to take off, but I rarely see the message.. opening the door, getting in, and putting on my seatbelt is usually enough time for the sensors to come online

I think this is not normal behavior as it just started happening to me for the first time this week (also only when parked in my garage, as it did not happen yesterday afternoon parked perpendicular on a street). So I just reset the software this morning, and it went away. I'll see if it says away. My radar sensors and camera often get dirty from driving back and forth to snowy Tahoe where they put dirt and salt on the highway and don't work until I clean them off. But I've had experiences where they still don't work after cleaning them until I reset the car. Another glitchy thing with this car's software. It's like an iphone on wheels. So it's probably best to just do a software reset with any funny warnings, etc like this. Interestingly, my prior Subaru never had this problem (and the rear cross traffic warnings in general worked better). Also Telsa has removed all radar sensors and is only using Cameras now for everything.

I get the warning every so often but it is not consistent. If it is happening every single time you have the vehicle in reverse, I'd try doing both a soft and hard reset first to see if that corrects it.

We had that warning 100% of the time in reverse since delivery of our Gen 2 R1S. Rivian had to replace ‘a sensor’ on the rear bumper and we’ve never seen it since. Other functionality that we didn’t even know we were missing like blind spot warning and automatic lane changes also started working when that was fixed.

R1T Gen2 DS. I only started getting this warning message 1.5wks ago after Rivian fixed my "Front Sensor Not Working" problem (replacement of a bad front radar sensor) and recalibrated both front and rear sensors. The warning message had never shown up since I took delivery (Dec'24). While at the service center for the aforementioned problem, they updated my truck to the new software version. That said, I can't tell if the warning message is due to a subpar recalibration job of the rear sensors or is an issue introduced in the new software. If the latter, there should be more people reporting it, I suppose. So for now I'm thinking it may have to do with sensor calibration(?).

Anyone have an update on this issue? After a soft and hard resent, I still get the warning backing out of the garage (which I did not get prior to the latest update), and it does not go off even after the car has completely backed out of the garage (in response to FooF) unless I get out of the car, wait a minute for it to sleep, and then get back in, or unless another car is actually driving behind me, but then it's too late if I were backing out since I would have already backed out into an oncoming car.

I get this warning occasionally in the garage or on private roads.

Anyone else offered a solution by Rivian service. Experiencing the same issue. Answer from service is that this is a known software issue for a limited number of VINs. But that’s just one service center’s conclusion.

On a Gen2 R1S dual motor I've been experiencing the "rear cross-traffic warning unavailable" consistently now (most times I drive) and also get a message that sensors are still "starting up" and not fully functioning. The issue seemed to manifest a couple of weeks ago after the 2025.14 software update was installed, though that could be coincidence, and I can't say for sure that it didn't happen before the software update. Proximity sensors and cameras are still working, so it seems to be just the radar sensor(s). For example, automatic lane change no longer works. I haven't seen many reports of this online, so a faulty sensor seems most likely. I made an appointment to have it checked out at a service center in a couple of weeks and will update when I have more information.

I've seen this every time I start up since the last update. Annoying because it's only when I first start up and back out of a spot that I would need this warning.

I've had this message since delivery back in April. My R1S was in service for 2.5 weeks for different issues but still see the message every time I start the vehicle. I assumed it was "normal" for Rivians because it usually starts up/message goes away after about 30 seconds.

I am at my wits end for a similar issue. My R1T now has the error icons that the proximity sensors won't work, nor any of the driver+ basically cruise control is disabled.

The Shelton svc center assured me last week when I picked it up, yet again for this issue saying that there is a communication module they replaced in the cab spoiler where the whale fin antenna is located.

I just pulled onto the main road in Shelton to drive home and the error messages came on again. Its too bad because everything else in the truck is terrific. But driving without cruise control long distance is a pita for me. I dont even care about their automated driver nonsense. Just give me normal adaptive cruise control.
