I find it is better on road trips to take more frequent charges than one long charge. This way you get to stretch your legs or use the restroom during a quick charge. Always navigate to the charger for preconditioning. If you show up at a charger and it is broken or all chargers are full it always better to show up with enough charge to make it to the next charger down the road just in case.
Excellent advice. But on our road trips across KS, SD and WY there is never another DCFC just down the road.

I really wish we had the manual precondition button. Just today, I navigated to a Tesla charger and saw the precondition alert hit about 15 minutes before I got there. The rate started slower and gradually sped up. That's the perfect sign that your battery wasn't ready. If I could have hit the button and saw that it was actively preparing the battery with some sort of status meter that would be such a major upgrade in convenience.

I hardly DCFC but the last few times at different Tesla chargers I felt like my adapter was broken. Today the battery was 35 degrees and I didn't precondition so it was charging at 24Kwh the entire time I shopped for about 20 minutes total. I didn't plan on charging so I didn't precondition but decided to charge because it was there. Just wild how slow it is in the winter to charge with DCFC if the conditions aren't right.

I tried it on 4 different DCFC (All Tesla) in the last month but the first 2 times were back to back locations after driving on a super cold day but couldn't recall battery temps. I should've tried my A2Z adapter as well to see if there was a difference between adapters. I switched pedestals and still had slow chaging so I left it alone until I had enough juice to get home and charge from there.

I'll try it by charging at home so the battery is a bit warmer and head to the same location to test again. 1 out of the 4 times it did ramp up in speed from 24Kwh to ~130Kwh but the other 3 times it was slow throughout the charge of 20 or so minutes until I gave up.
