I might be missing something here, but for those who want the cap, why not just buy the R1S? If you knock the seats down, you essentially have a limited-height bed.

Because the 180 kWh max pack is only available in the T.

Oh, wait a minute...

But seriously, I can think of a lot of things, such as yard waste, that I would put in the back of a pickup but not a SUV. And you can take the cap off if you want to put a fridge or something massive back there - something that wouldn't fit in a SUV.

Ah ok, yeah, that makes sense.

Reactivating this thread.

I did a search, and no bed cap solutions appear to be available yet. Has anyone had better luck?
I traded some emails with Softopper over this past week. They have a list of people that want them to produce a Softopper shell, however, they have not worked on it yet. They mentioned that once they “get enough interest” they will make one. Everyone, go over to their website and submit a request! We need to make this happen.

  • R1T was available at time of delivery, R1S was not
  • Gear tunnel
  • Spare tire
  • Can do truck stuff by removing cap
  • Can potentially have more storage than R1S with a cap

R1S was $5,000 more and probably at least 9 months more worth of waiting, maybe more. If I had waited, my Mach E would have probably only been worth maybe $30k in private sale rather than the $50k I got for it. Functionally, it would have been like $25,000 more for the R1S. Also, I haven’t owned a truck in a while and wanted the versatility/fun since my wife has a nice SUV if I really need it. I’ve got some fond memories of the 2 trucks I’ve owned and there’s a bit of emotion involved of having another as well.

Please share an email address / form to go fill…

I spoke with SmartCap people and have a similar “we talked about it but nothing concrete yet “

All of those, plus:
1) 11,000 pounds of towing capability. It is possible that I won't tow anything that exceeds the R1S capability, but I want that option.
2) Powered Tonneau Cover. My R1T was supposed to come with a (working) PTC, which would have given me some of the function of a topper (secured transport for tools and supplies). But mine was broken and disabled at the SC, before I picked it up.
3) I didn't realize that there would be a long delay before toppers would become available commercially. I assumed that manufacturers would bring out models suitable for the R1T, so that I would have that as an option.
4) didn't want or need 3rd row seating (heck, I didn't really *need* the second row seating). I didn't like paying for and hauling around those seats and other things related to them (e.g. everything needed to provide a/c for the 3rd row).

I have an email into RSI. i have their SS cap on my Tacoma great product and really looks nice as well. Want to see if they might consider designng one for R1t owners. It does weigh 200 lbs but the roof of the cap can support 700 lbs for sleeping and camping tents. Also comes on. Pallet that you assemble so shipping is pretty easy

I've done my part! Got an email back from Softopper:
Currently we are gathering emails for parties interested in a Rivian R1T SofTopper design. We have added your email to the Rivian R1T new design interest email list. If we have enough interested parties, that may possibly set the wheels in motion to have one made. If there are any other interested parties you know of that are in the same boat, please send them our way so we can account for them & put them on the list as well.

I emailed them as well, just a generic “we’re glad you’re interested“ marketing email back ?

We are entering in the second year of production, Close to 30k trucks produced and no single manufacturer wants to make the bed cap.
30k is not a lot of tucks and 2 years is not a lot of time.
