Rivian R2 Performance - Tire Swap

I have ordered a Rivian R2 Performance with Launch Package and 21 inch tires. Once these first set of OEM tires wear out, is it possible to replace those with 19 inch tires? Based on what I read 255/55R21 tires can be replaced by 255/65R19 but not sure what the implications would be.

19” and 21” are the wheel diameters. That’s what the two digits after “R” in the tire sizes indicate. In order to switch to 255/65R19 tires you will have to buy a new set of wheels, not just tires. And that’s assuming the 19” wheels you get has enough clearance for the brakes, in addition to having the correct bolt pattern, offset and hub bore.

Size of a 255/65R19 tire is actually 32.1” (overall diameter). The 255 is width in millimeters. 65 is a percentage. 65% of 255 is height of sidewall. Sidewall height x 2 + diameter of wheel = overall diameter of entire tire.

Wheel size as @UnsungZero_OldTimeAdMan already noted is the primary determinant of "can I put this tire on this wheel" then you go to "what is the effective overall diameter of this tire on this wheel".

So if you look at all the available tires on all the available R2 wheels (19", 20", 21") you will find that they all end up with the same OD (outer diameter) - 32" IIRC. But also as AdMan Barnum pointed out, you can't just buy random 19" wheels and expect them to match the R2 brake calipers and bolt pattern/offset.

You will need the wheels with same offset first. The next step is to make sure the wheels don't touch the brakes. Rivian will support 19 inch tires, but we don't know if that version will have smaller brakes.

Why do you want to go from 21" to 19"? You'd need to buy an aftermarket set of 19" wheels that would fit the R2 (19x8, 5x114.3, ET 38, 64.1 bore) in order to run the 19" tires. Rivian has the 19" wheels+tires set but you'd have to wait until 2027 when they release the Standard version of the R2. You'd be able to buy it from Rivian by the time your 21" set wears out.

There are already aftermarket 19" and 20" wheels available 3rd party for the R2 so it should be a simple matter of deciding which ones fit your desired looks and picking which tires will work for the desired application. With the total cost of wheels and tires compared to those available at that time with the 21" tires that may or may not be available by the time they are needed. I will be doing that choice myself when the time comes.

19, like 21, is another oddball size. But 7 more tire options than the 1 for 21.
