Consumer reports has rated the Pirelli P4 Four Seasons Plus tire to have one of the longest tested treadwear at 100K.

The Pirelli P4 Four Seasons Plus has a treadwear rating of 760. Given that the treadwear rating is developed by the manufacturer using reference tires from the manufacturer, we can do some extrapolation here.

For the 500 treadwear rated 22's: = ~65K (500/760 x 100,000)
For the 600 treadwear rated 21's: = ~79K (600/760 x 100,000)
For the 640 treadwear rated 20's: = ~84K (640/760 x 100,000)

Now, all three tires here have different load ratings:

P4 4 Season 17: 1709
Pirelli 21/20: 2760
Pirelli 22: 2679

And that may also impact the treadwear even if, in theory, the tire should be constructed in a way that it should account for that (stronger sidewall). Added weight, may reduce overall treadwear.

Additional speed (the R1T is likely to burn tread at a higher rate given the acceleration) will also likely impact treadwear.

So, for the sake of argument, and to make the math easier, let's assume a 10% penalty for each (weight and acceleration).

That leads to the following predicted real-world tread life:

For the 500 treadwear rated 22's: ~65K (500/760 x 100,000) - 20% = ~53K
For the 600 treadwear rated 21's: ~79K (600/760 x 100,000) - 20% = ~63K
For the 640 treadwear rated 20's: ~84K (640/760 x 100,000) -20% = ~67K

For those averaging 12K miles per year, that would mean replacement of all 4 tires at a rate of:

22's = ~4.4 years
21's = ~5.25 years
20's = ~7 years

Somebody call out any bad math. Somebody who loves math. You know who you are! :sun:
Not calling out bad mad, just a faulty assumption that the tires will last as long as the manufacturer claims. I can't see any possibility that a 7,000+ lb Rivian is going to get your real-world adjusted tire life. I hope I'm wrong...

I'll be ecstatic if they last 50% of those estimated lifespans. Still a healthy amount of life out of a wearable item, especially without the need for other typical ICE maintenance.

If you get 50% of the lifespan then you are one lucky SOB for sure. My OG Model S was alright, about 25K from 50K tires, albeit RWD and 60 battery so it was lighter. My other one P90D with sport tires, I got about 9k ( yes nine ).

How will these handle the weight of Rivian?
Absolutely fine. New to EV people get stuck on weight. Truth is F150 gvwr is almost the same as R1, but Evs are subjected to higher g loading due to CG and acceleration from a stop. And they're both XL, so the Falken has a 2833lb rating per tire, but it's heavy at 48lbs each.

Someone on Reddit reported a delivery with 20” wheels with AS tires directly from Rivian.

Very curious to see what size this tire is if confirmed, but I bet it would be this one, which seems like the best AS tire for the 20” wheels:

i highly doubt this is an option. particularly based on the news that Rivian wants to batch builds as much as possible. id also recommend going with 21s and then buying aftermarket rims. i also dont think the 21s will have many more options in the future. it remains unique to Rivian and based on just the number of vehicles that will be out there, dont expect a lot of otpions. if you want to save money get the 21s for now. once the original tire is worn, look for either 20s or 22s that fit. you'll have more options short term and long term and it'll be cheaper than buying the Rivian 20s or 22s.

you are right, and the person confirmed it was an error (they took delivery of 21s).

can’t wait to see what aftermarket wheel options come out and what the pricing is like.
