Ordered a Quad R1T in El Cap with Ocean Coast about a month ago and I'm in the process of finalizing the 8 step process, though when I put the VIN through my insurance, it came out as a 2022 model. Sure enough, in checking the forum and how to decode the Rivian VIN's, it is a '22. The VIN I was assigned ends in NN014xxx.

I'm waiting to hear back from my advisor as to build date, but should I be concerned that they're trying to sell me a 2022 build in August of 2023? I'm worried that the vehicle was a reject or failed initial inspection when it arrived to the service center way back when and they're just trying to clear it out now.

I'm amped to be getting the truck, but not so much to be paying full price for a vehicle that could technically be a year old.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the truck itself. Not that you would ever be able to find out if it were a reject or 7 day return, I am sure Rivian would have gone over that truck with a fine tooth comb to put it out for sale again. If there were any issues I bet they got them fixed.

It’s also possible it isn’t a return. I didn’t take delivery of my R1T quad (17XXX VIN) until the end of June because it was sitting at the factory waiting for PPF Until Rivian removed that from my order due to the delays on their end applying that.

Weird things happen and vehicles just sit there at the factory sometimes. Or someone who ordered it decided they couldn’t or wouldn’t take delivery.

You get the same new truck warranty we all get, so personally I wouldn’t hesitate to take it. But it’s your purchase and you should only do it if you are comfortable with it.

It's a bit late, lose some value with that one year so I'd say switch for a 2023 at this point, or ask for a discount (doesn't happen).

It's most likely just fine, but I would ask a lot of questions before committing to take delivery. We took delivery of our R1T at the factory in Normal in April of this year. She has a 2023 VIN and her VIN ends 224xx. Her data plate shows a March, 2023 production.

As a shareholder, I obviously want Rivian to succeed and become profitable, but this practice of delivering 2022 VINs more than halfway through 2023 without telling buyers and offering a discount is starting to bother me.

As much as local new car dealers suck, none of them would try to pull this - you can see the window sticker. Rivian is not giving fair disclosure and it’s borderline unethical in my opinion.

This is an actual issue? When I figured out last night that is was a 2022, I was looking around in the forums but couldn't see any other threads on this.

If I had been to a brick and mortar dealer, they would have offered a discount for purchasing last year's model and then you, as the consumer, would choose whether to take a year old automobile for a discount, or pay full price for a current.

I found it a little strange that the service center was pushing me to get there ASAP to finalize the purchase. It has been radio silence from my guide, though it is the weekend, yet I texted the number that purported to be from the service center to ask them when the automobile was built and why a model from last year has been sitting around and I was advised to wait for my guide, as they don't have "visibility" on it and don't want to hazard a guess.

I love the truck, but I love transparency a little more. I'll wait to see what the guide says before I cast any aspersions, but the whole situation is starting to give me pause now.

There have been a handful of other people getting 2022 model year after selecting them from the shop. IMO that was ok back in March or April, but August? Needs to be disclosed up front in the shop.

That's interesting, especially since I didn't even choose from the shop. I just received a text from the service center that my truck was there. I purposely "built" the quad motor and didn't select from the ready to go versions in the hopes that I would get one recently off the line.

I've read there's some benefits to the older ones (better sound system, 12 volt in the frunk), so I'll see what the guide has to say and will take it from there.

I’ve gone back and forth in my mind with my Dual/Max pre-order and potentially switching to Quad/Large, especially after the warranty change, but I just can’t get comfortable with the Shop vehicles for this very reason - no VIN’s, no build dates. You don’t get really relevant info until after you’ve gone pretty deep into the purchase process.

I just looked at my neighbors R1T VIN. His is a December 2022 build with an low 16xxx serial number. His has Meridian sound system, but did not have power in the frunk or under the dash. He works at Rivian and said he wouldn't hesitate to buy a 14xxx VIN. He said some vehicles were set aside off
the assembly line because they were waiting for parts for the trucks to be completed. When the parts showed up, they were put straight onto vehicles that were going down then assembly line, rather than placing them on cars waiting on parts in the storage lot It has taken a while to catch up with enough parts to feed the assembly line and the vehicles that were stored waiting for them. They are finally going back and finishing those vehicles.

At this point in the model year I’d consider a 2022 almost two years old so should be priced accordingly. Most manufacturers are into the 2024 model year. If you’re keeping it a long time, at some point mileage matters more than age, but right now I’d want at least 15% off and/or some kind of extended warranty as an inducement to cover the depreciation hit.

A definite pass for me. No way would I accept a 2022 model in Q3 of 2023.

Strongly agree with both posts!

Some manufacturers are starting to sell their 2024 models right now.. .and Rivian is selling you a 2022 first of all without disclosing that information and second at full boat? Say that for some reason you don't like the truck or for some reason need to sell it in a couple of months... it will already be valued as a 2yr old vehicle by that point even though you just got it.

Um, no... hard pass!
