I think the OP is pointing out that Rivian, despite all its capabilities, cameras, and tech, is lagging behind the market (even the ICE market) when it comes to lane-keep.

I just sold a 2024 Lexus GX550 and their adaptive cruise control and lane-keep works on ANY road (assuming decent visibility). They don’t even market the feature or have a brand name for it. Just their built-in driver assistance. It is far superior to Rivian’s adaptive cruise control and lane-keep. I realize Rivian doesn’t really have lane-keep unless on a mapped Highway as part of Driver+, but that’s kind of the point. Why not?!!

They have a lot of catching up to do in this space. And it’s a feature I didn’t know I needed until I had the Lexus. The OP is making a valid critique.
That can absolutely be a valid critique, but that certainly wasn't clear from the OP. Because the Highway Assist portion of Driver+ doesn't generally ping pong, and there is no other lane centering feature, so it comes across as completely misunderstanding how the truck currently works, as evidenced by the number of people asking questions to clarify the OP.

I'm pretty sure you're just using the assist in a way it was not designed for. Lane keep assist is there to make sure you don't run off the road while texting, or whatever. Its not meant to steer for you. I think its abrupt nature is intended because its meant to grab your attention not enable your inattentiveness.

I don't care for it either, but I also don't expect it to steer for me. I have it as disabled as possible so I can avoid all the potholes without constant complaints / intervention from the nanny.

If the OP has a Gen 1, as I assume is the case, it isn't going to do what he desires. Highway Assist will probably, over time, work on more highways, but I think that Rivian is devoting its efforts to implement level 3 driver assistance to its Gen 2 vehicles.
If the OP wants something better in his current vehicle, perhaps he should install a Comma AI OpenPilot system; it seems unlikely that Rivian will ever do that in Gen 1 vehicles. It would seem that Rivian had intended to achieve level 3, originally, but has given up on doing that with Gen 1.

Fittingly, Rivian just released a YouTube video a few hours ago talking about the future of Autonomy with RJ in the driver seat.

I do get what OP is asking.

It is a bummer to hear RJ and James talk about the upcoming features and understand that those of us G1'er will not get the rural street features.

I recently rented a Genesis GV80 for the week and while playing with the cruise features discovered that the car can drive on street roads with lane centering features. It was pretty cool. Then, I started asking why can't my late 2023 R1S Quad do that, with more electronics and such. Not that I would use the feature much, just would have been cool to have (like I know I can go 0-60 in 3.0 sec if I want to, but don't do it much). Nice to have.

I looked at the Comma.ai thing, just don't like the wires. Cool though.

Oh well. I still love my ride.

There is an aftermarket solution. Read the threads here about comm.ai or review the info on their website. Far better than what Rivian currently offers. It works in places where Rivian won't.

Go here to check it out. https://comma.ai/

I'll echo this, for all the terribleness of the Hyundai Kona EV I got for a owner during my last service, its lane-keep assist + adaptive cruise control made it just as good as Rivian Driver+ on the interstate. And lane-keep was much smoother on local roads than the Rivian.

Toyota has a similar lane keep assist (it's not a true lane centering system) that does not ping pong and generally drives centered in the lane

it's enough that if you put a weight on the steering wheel it performs almost a lane centering function.
