All right I got a question.

I just got done driving a 2024 Honda Odyssey. And using the autopilot with lane control it works so nice. I've actually ridden in a Tesla also and it seem like it works so nice but that is different that's complete autopilot. But the Odyssey is just the lane control.

So my question is why is Rivians lane control so stupid compared to Honda Odyssey? When I use lane control in my Rivian it's so abrupt when it gets close to the lane, it doesn't foresee you going over towards the lane to draw you back. It only starts drawing you back once it's hit the lane. Which in turn abruptly draws you back the other way.

So is there a setting to make it a smooth as the Honda Odyssey? Or is it rivian's way to say we're not allowing you to use lane control as an semi-autopilot.

Sometimes it will even get close to the lane and it'll cross over the lane without even realizing. Why? I drove the Honda Odyssey and it was a 2024 her 1200 miles.... And it was so nice.

So again my question is why isn't Rivian this way?

Thanks for all the help for me to understand

Are you talking about lane centering, or lane keep assist?

Lane centering handles the steering for you, but is only available on the highway, when you double pull the gear stock

The behavior you're describing sounds more like lane keep assist that's active all the time, but acts more like bumpers on a bowling lane that just bounce you off the edges

Well what I'm talking about is not the feature that auto follows a car it's more the feature that keeps you between the lines. when you have it on cruise control or not.... I think they call it lane assist in set up.

Lane centering (where it steers for you, to keep you in the lane) only works on the highway.

One pull on the gear stock to engage Cruise control, double pull to ALSO engage the steering (called highway assist)

Otherwise it's just "bowling lane bumpers"

There is an aftermarket solution. Read the threads here about comm.ai or review the info on their website. Far better than what Rivian currently offers. It works in places where Rivian won't.

Go here to check it out. https://comma.ai/

I agree that the lane departure assist isn't very good on the Rivian. It will ping pong you within the lane. I don't like the highway assist either as it stays right in the middle of the lane, and I like to hug the left side because the large trucks are on the right side.

I agree with you and I'm just surprised I'm just wondering with all the technology that they have Do they put this in place so that people don't use the lane assist?

I may be misunderstanding your posts but it seems like you are using lane assist/warning/keeping to function like a lane-centering capability. Like a kind of autopilot thing. Self driving without turns?

Is that right or have I misunderstood?

I just was testing it out the other day. I'm thinking about how nice the Honda Odyssey worked. Compared to the Rivian.... It's true with the other person said it just ping pongs from one end to the other end. With the Honda Odyssey I personally think it sees it and starts slowly correcting it before it gets there. Rivian.... Weights until it gets to the line then it corrects. You would think that they would have the capability to do the same thing as a Honda. Or any of the other car companies.

OP I have a '20 Fit EX with Honda Sense and Comma. Does the '24 Odyssey have a beefed up Honda Sense as the Fit's HS was basically ping pong before comma and it wouldn't center you like the S will do on the Highway with Drive+.

Are you trying this on a mapped highway? Or on surface streets?

If you're on a mapped highway and activating Lane Centering from Driver+ by pulling down the stalk twice, and still seeing this behavior, something is wrong and you should have it looked at. My truck stays quite happily in the center of the lanes and does not ping pong at all.

If you're just pulling the stalk down once, or if you're on surface streets, the Rivian is *not* trying to lane center at all. You need to be on a mapped highway, see the lane centering icon on the screen, and activate it by pulling down twice on the stalk.

If it engages successfully, you'll see an animation of a grid pattern being overlaid on the driver display, and see the lane lines turn blue indicating the lane centering is active. If you aren't seeing that, you aren't in lane centering mode.

This whole conversation becomes so much easier if one reads enough of the user manual to understand what "Highway Assist" is, and where it works. There is no other true lane centering, unless it is in Highway Assist (which will only function on mapped highways).

I think the OP is pointing out that Rivian, despite all its capabilities, cameras, and tech, is lagging behind the market (even the ICE market) when it comes to lane-keep.

I just sold a 2024 Lexus GX550 and their adaptive cruise control and lane-keep works on ANY road (assuming decent visibility). They don’t even market the feature or have a brand name for it. Just their built-in driver assistance. It is far superior to Rivian’s adaptive cruise control and lane-keep. I realize Rivian doesn’t really have lane-keep unless on a mapped Highway as part of Driver+, but that’s kind of the point. Why not?!!

They have a lot of catching up to do in this space. And it’s a feature I didn’t know I needed until I had the Lexus. The OP is making a valid critique.
