Rivian replaced my 12v battery and HV battery at 800 miles, now at 4,200 mi I'm getting this intermittently:

Rivian R1T R1S Service 12v battery system notification message 20230215_182456

A full reset will clear it, but it will return after a day or so.

Thoughts? (Service request submitted.)

Have service replace them (again) s00n before you get locked out.

They seems to be a weak link. I’ve not seen anyone yet do a self-service swap with something more robust. I carry a jump battery in the frunk just in case.

I’m curious if these are considered wear items where the customer pays or if it’s warranted.

I am using my butt-o-meter, in how aggressively the charge door opens and closes. It varies a fair amount, from super fast to fairly slow. That tells me the voltage is swinging a fair amount. If it gets super slow, that would seem to indicate lower voltages.

It sure would be nice if we could get a 12v system voltage read-out somewhere. And if it drops below a threshold, then an alert on app.

I guess to replace them yourself you would need a way of keeping the system powered while you remove them. There is probably some kind of shunt involved too.

Luckily I have other vehicles to drive in the event she bricks before Rivian can get a hold of it, so I'm not worried about that.

Hopefully they iron out their longevity, I'm sure it's one of many small thorns in their side at the moment.

I've also been through dealing with the crappy Rivian 12V issues. They have already replaced them but I have a feeling it's only a matter of time before I need them to get replaced again. I've been experimenting with watching the voltage of the 12V system with a little plug in volt meter such as this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NL174ZW?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Couple of things I've noticed:
1. When you first get into the truck, especially after a cold night, sometimes the voltage is low and hovers around 12.4 to 12.5 volts initially. If you step on the brake (and trigger the initial startup of the truck) at this voltage, you may trigger a false error such as a drive unit fault, 12V fault, etc. I suspect the voltage may drop too low and trigger these faults.
2. If I wait a couple of seconds to 1 to 2 minutes, the voltage will slowly start to come up. At 12.6 Volts and higher, I have yet to trigger a fault.
3. If I turn on the heater/AC, the voltage starts to come up much quicker. I think this maybe a trigger to initiate charging the 12V batteries from the main drive battery. What I've done is on colder days, I'll "precondition" the system by turning on the heat about 10 to 15 minutes before using the truck.

Anyway, these are some initial observations. I wish Rivian would figure out a better way of monitoring the 12V system and a better fix for it.

Rivian remote diagnostics revealed that the battery is frequently discharging to "9 volts" before the charger kicks in to replenish it.

They said it looks like a loose connection.

Going into service next Wednesday for them to check it out.

Rivian service has completed work on the truck. They just replaced the batteries.

I mentioned to the Tech that this is the third set of 12v batteries this truck has had in 5,000 miles and i was concerned that it was a symptom of the problem with the onboard charger or something else and he just said "they ran a battery health check and got the green light".

So i dunno. ?‍♂ Fingers crossed.

So I'm starting to get the recurrent "motor fault detected" warning, especially starting up on cold morning. This was the initial sign that the 12V battery was going bad. So annoying...seems like I'm going to have to get my 12V battery replaced, AGAIN! This all started again after the most recent update. I wonder if the recurrent updates are causing issues that the batteries start to get drain due to background software activity?

It seems when the 12v are at a low SOC you'll get all sorts of random errors. My particular issue is it's intermittent. One day they will be low, the next they will be fine. These aren't your standard batteries though, lots of terminals.

I hope they got all those terminals nice and tight this time because I only drive this truck for fun, and I treat it rough. ?

Random unrelated pic of my two favorite toys.

Truck back at home.
New 12v installed.

I still personally don't think it's fixed, but I guess we will see in three months or so.

Rivian gets 1 more try before it qualifies for lemon. ?‍? Which is a shame because it's such a silly issue.

It's a terminal block that's bolted onto the battery. It's actually not that uncommon to do this with individual fusing for big power draw items in EVs but Rivian's is the biggest block I've seen.

My F-250 6.7 Powerstroke has a shunt on one of its two batteries that's similar, but it is connected to the "side" of the battery and has three or four terminals.

Since there is no fancy frunk panel covering it ford covers it individually.

Also, only a 3-year/36k mile factory warranty on the 12v batteries.

Thank you I just ordered one.

Picked up my R1S last Friday. Earlier this week (at around 200 miles) I started getting the "Service 12V battery" warning on dash, with the little yellow battery icon. Rivian tech support had me to a soft reset and a hard reset, went away for half of a day but it has came back and doesn't really go away anymore, despite doing a couple more resets along the way. I live in Colorado where it has been pretty cold lately, but the R1S is usually parked in my garage (still cold there). Anyways, they have me bringing in the R1S to the service center on Tuesday.

Also have noticed random "AWD permanently engaged, service vehicle soon" warnings (may not be the exact wordage) which when this happens I am unable to change drive modes or suspension height. These usually happen when I am already driving, and tend to go away after a few minutes. Pretty frustrating as the vehicle has less than 200 miles on it.
