I'm planning on getting ceramic tint on the windshield. Does that offer protection for the glass? I wasn't thinking about tint in this context but it is an external application that is at least a few mm thick.

This whole glass thing with Rivian is bullshit. They have to know that their glass sucks. The question is how to get them to acknowledge it?

Yes, I get that “bad experiences” will tend to accumulate on the forums. I haven’t done the math, but it sure seems like there aren’t enough of these on the road that would garner this amount of glass problems in so short a time. Or else, we’re just a bunch of unlucky bastards.
I broke the windshield in my Hummer but so far I haven't broke any glass on my Rivian. So far it and the Polestar are the only cars I've owned that have avoided a broken windshield.

You're unlucky bastards.

Cracked glass on trucks is common due to the more upright nature of the mounting and larger surface area. Check out other forums like this to compare.

it may turn out to be that many new Rivian owners are not aware of how common this sort of issue is, but only time willl tell if there is a real problem here or if the reality of owning a truck is simply a new experience.

If this stuff keeps happening we might have to get together as owners and file a glass action lawsuit.
If you do get a bunch of people to chip in, Temper your expectations. It’ll take a crack team of lawyers. A judge might decide Rivian isn’t over the AS-1 line and they’re in the clear.

rivian’s glass supplier is so good they were the subject of a documentary

I anticipate that, working together, we can shatter their defense team.

I don't actually think legal action is required by owners, I just couldn't resist the pun opportunity. That said, based on what is known about the supplier I am willing to give Rivian the benefit of the doubt here and assume that they provided specs to the glass supplier and the glass that is failing does not meet the spec that the engineers came up with. If that's the case, and assuming that there are instances of glass failure that are outside the norm, Rivian should do 2 things immediately:

1) sever their relationship with the current supplier and find a new one.

2) file legal action against the current supplier to hold them responsible for replacement of existing glass that is not meeting the specs.

The Rivian insurance representative included 100% glass replacement with $0 deductible in the policy that was quoted to me - which was comparable in price with my 3rd party quotes that did not include the glass coverage. I hope OP case is covered by warranty, but this coverage considering all of the glass in the R1T may be worthwhile!

I think I picked a $100 deductible on my Rivan insurance but ideally I don't have to use it.

How long have the prototypes been on the road? I never watched it, but did anything happen to the R1T’s in The Long Way Up? Unless they changed glass suppliers to cut costs right before production, there should be a history of glass damage shouldn’t there? The prototypes were out getting bounced around on rough trails and unmaintained roads long before non employee customers got their hands on them.

Mud and dirt are a badge of honor for a performance off-road vehicle! Rivian knows this and never intended for their adventure vehicles to be abused by soap and water!

And they’ll make a killing selling the new Rivian sunglasses in the shop.

Sure seems like Rivian may be using some type of unique (cheap) glass. While maybe not a huge widespread problem, does seem like the roof glass, and now apparently the rear window glass, are pretty fragile.

I've seen videos of thieves trying to break into cars that pound like crazy on windows to try and break them and they don't break. We've now seen a few issues with the roof where the glass has shattered with apparently light pressure. Now, the rear window?

Just like the tonneau cover needing a complete redesign, possibly the roof and window glass needs a new supplier that can provide stronger glass?

Even blowing a rock into this thing with a leaf blower, shouldn't have caused it to shatter like that. At worst, maybe a crack at the point of impact, but spread to shatter the entire window?

Wondering if maybe somehow the glass was already cracked and not noticed? Then the leaf blower just pushed it over the edge?

Very interesting. For an "Adventure Vehicle", I already feel like I have to be so careful with my truck to avoid some of the issues. Adventure vehicles are supposed to be really tough. If these issues are more widespread, then the Rivian is a little too fragile. Hoping these are just one-off rare events, rather than flaws with the materials.

Is Rivian charging you to replace the glass?

If Rivian is charging for the glass, wondering if it might be better to use a company like Safelite to replace the glass? I think they use their own suppliers rather than actual factory glass, thus what they use might be more up to industry standards than whatever Rivian is using? I don't know if they do more than just windshields?
I'm checking in with Rivian today so no details just yet. I'm more concerned about the timing, I have travel planned a few weeks from now and ideally it can be fixed before or while I'm away.

It's certainly possible there was an imperfection, I can't say I spent much time inspecting it. It's funny I took so much care avoiding any contact with the spoiler and roof glass for fear of breaking one...I should actually go check it to confirm there's no damage.

At first when it was just the chip I was on the phone with Rivian assuming it would be a mild annoyance that I could live with for a while until things were sorted. It literally shattered while I was explaining the issue, you could hear the glass stress until it looked like the picture.

If only Munroe had a polariscope to test glass strain....

That may be the only way towards transparency. Though it may fracture our relationship with Rivian.

This is my nth truck, n>5. I’ve never had a truck before with a cracked windshield. My “fun” cars are another story.

Unfortunately this option is only available in some states.
