I'm fine with paying my fair share but EV registration fees are the lazy way out. Fuel taxing is no longer an effective way to pay for our infrastructure. They should eliminate fuel taxes and move to a usage based fee.

They could charge a high fee for say 35,000 miles per year usage and then allow folks to opt into a program where they have their mileage scanned annually and only be charged based on their mileage.

Many states already have kiosks for emissions testing where they scan a vehicle via OBD port. Those could be utilized for this purpose.

• Jan. 1, 2028: prices will stay at $274 and will be adjusted annually for inflation

I’m ok with a usage based fee as long as all states agree (I do realize that is not going to happen). It would sure suck to have to pay usage fees in my home state on my mileage then get charged a per kWh tax in whatever state I’m traveling in, double taxation at it’s finest.

Oregon has been offering an optional mileage based program for a while.

Same here. It’s insane and the most I ever paid in any state I lived in and that includes California and Illinois.

We’re indeed pretty lucky in Texas it seems, just the first time I’ve seen since the new tax was passsed last year.

My annual registration in Iowa is around $960. EV fee is $130, the rest (which applies to any passenger vehicle) is based on the vehicle's value, age, and weight

Florida is supposed to implement a $200 EV road fee. I renewed the Rivian in October for two years without any EV fee. I would assume that by my next tag renewal in 2025, that fee will be in place.

I would take any of your reg costs. Colorado is the land of taxes. Want to buy a vehicle? Gimme tax, want to drive your vehicle? Ownership tax yearly. 1st year on R1S was $1800.
