Identical issue here. Just returned from my first over 220-mile trip. I typically kept under 75 for efficiency but once I increased to 80, the shakes started, and I usually dropped back down for comfort and quiet. I was wondering whether to call service and have it formally logged to simply try to get high speed balancing done on my own, but worry if it does not work, they may make me at fault for the problem.

Definitely poor tire balancing.
But also check for mud caked inside the wheel. That's also done the same for me.

When I got my 20s, I had pretty much the same issue, large shaking above 75mph. Brought it back to service and they did a much better job balancing the second time (I wouldn't say perfect).
Then after the next service visit (many thousands of miles later), they balance was a bit off again, mostly above 80. Only when I rotated my wheels did I discover the wheels were caked with mud, mostly on half. Yeah, my truck was washed by the service center and brought in muddy. They rinsed it down and let it sit, for hours, so all that muddy water pooled and dried in the wheels.

I look forward to switching back to my much smoother and much quieter 21s soon

Got my tires road force balanced by Discount Tire. They said two of the tires were out of balance by a noticeable amount and they were able to bring down the road force quite a bit as well. $100 all in.

The tech that worked on my truck said they had quite a few Rivians in for this "problem". Probably a combination of bad balancing from the factory, poor follow-up by the service center, and Pirelli's aren't always perfect from factory.

Did say they couldn't get the road force down to a # they would consider great (I have 11000 miles on my tires) but did get it to what they would consider good. The worst of the shaking has largely been fixed, and what's left is what I would consider road feel (the steering feel does seem to be tuned pretty sensitively on these trucks).

Anyways hope that helps.

Actually, I'm disappointed in Rivian service. My other experiences are far better than with Rivian. BMW got me in promptly. Had a BMW loaner for me and got my car back in a prompt manner. Rivian is nothing like that so far.
I have only been able to get a Mercedes loaner in NYC once, and that was because I had a 2-month repair to replace the dual-clutch under warranty, but they would only offer me a ride to my job every other time. Volvo has never offered me a loaner even after asking 2 months in advance, only a ride home. Rivian SC in Brooklyn got me Uber credits and an upgraded rental for 2 weeks my truck was in service. You must have a really good or not busy BMW dealer near you.

My previous new Volvo had a really bad tire balance when I bought it. Took weeks for the dealer to fix it and they acted like they did me a favor by not charging me for the tire balance.

Unfortunately, rivian sucks at balancing tires.
Honestly it isn't really Rivian it's the size of the tires. I have had issues with balance on these tires both from Rivian and Discount Tire and had them rebalanced from a local shop that also didn't fix it.

I realize this is not a helpful comment. Just amused all the people who say "I have problems going over 80 mph". Where I live is one of the most traffic-congested areas of the country. My Rivian will probably never see much in excess of 50 mph, and most days are stuck in miles and miles of stop-and-go at under 25 mph. No issues at those speeds, LOL.

Maybe I should have bought a bicycle, instead. Could probably go faster around here. ?

Good luck getting your issues resolved!

If vibration is zero at other speeds, it can be a suspension/bearing issue. I mean something that is not the tire and wheel.

Soooo, just went on a 1000 mile round trip - road trip with lots of 75 mph + roads. I would say road force balancing didn't fix anything and I was caught up in being optimistic. Will probably try the service center again...

Mine does the same thing!
I was told by the service center it’s normal - haaaaaaa! What a joke.
Just take it to your local tire center and they will get you squared away, at least I would hope so. I had discount tire balance mine via road force and they were all pretty good, just 2 needed a slight change. None the less it still has a left to right movement in the stering wheel past 70. And Rivian tells me unfortunately it’s normal.
I just love spending $80K+ on this…

This is good to know and why I always had stuck with Lexus and Acura. I was given a loaner everytime my vehicles were in for service. Even for relatively small stuff like routine maintenance one day stuff. Even the Jeep and Ford dealers give me loaners. Maybe service is just better in the midwest. Not sure....

Had it in service center again; pushed a little bit back on the advisor. The gist of it was this: alignment and tire balance won't fix it in their experience. He did acknowledge they get this complaint a lot and that Rivian corporate is aware and apparently working on a fix. He felt that vin's marked with this complaint could see a campaign but obviously didn't know what or when or how or if that would happen. Seemed to point to a "heavier" steering wheel, or rack components. This take makes sense to me, the truck tracks straight and handles fine, but the vibration both through the steering wheel and the chassis is obnoxious at 75+mph regardless.

My take is this: the truck is tuned too sensitively, combined with too light of a steering wheel, and instances where the truck just isn't quite perfect with the combination of tire quality, alignment, suspension, and subrame (mine is welded) the truck transfers all of that vibration to the cabin. I think this might be a characteristic of trucks not built quite right OR the chassis doesn't handle imperfections well.

It's the kind of thing where new tires might fix it or it might not.. who knows. I don't love it, and I don't love it for what an 80k+ vehicle should be. It's not the end of the world and my outlook, long term, is time will tell how big of a deal it ends up being.

I wonder if it would help folks with this issue if Rivian reduced the electric steering power assist at higher speed…

I’m curious what wheels/tires people have that are experiencing this. I assumed I would see it on the 22s (dark wheels) but over 8k miles and have not seen it yet.

I didn’t have shake at any speed on 21’s. I do have it on 20’s. Discount tire put them on, pretty bad shake at 65. Took it back and they said one was slightly off but didnt think bad enough to entirely fix. Much better but still a little shake. I agree it must be weight of tires vs steering components.
