Tesla Universal Wall Connector Price Increase

The price of the Tesla Universal Wall Connector has increased from $550 to $650. This new price is reflected on the Tesla Store and Amazon, although Best Buy currently still lists it at the previous $550 price.

*UPDATE* Less than a day after I posted this, BB increased the price by $30.

Are there any advantages getting universal vs nacs one? I already have tesla tap mini. Asking as I am moving to new home and would need to install new chargers

IMO it's way, way easier to use the UWC with the built-in adapter, especially if you're charging different EVs. I keep my adapter with the Tesla UMC in the frunk for traveling.

Sucks that they jacked up the price by almost 20%, but this is still the best EVSE out there for most use cases.

My opinion an adapter is an adapter, never saw the benefit of having one built in.

I went with an Emporia charger with a J1772 plug and just use a Tesla adapter with that for my Tesla. Both the charger and Tesla adapter can be purchased for under $470.

A minor issue but Theoretically you have to wait 30 seconds or so after connecting the Tesla Tap Mini before plugging it into the Rivian, to ensure it’s communicating properly for J1772 charging. With the Tesla Universal, it automatically tries and fails on Tesla protocol then switches to J1772.

I put a TUC at a shared family cabin where some own Teslas and others have J1772 EVs. Much simpler to deal with in case people don’t have or bring adapters. Also a friend put one at a second home he sometimes rents out on VRBO, for the same reason.

That is why I purchased a charger with J1772 cable. The J1772 to Tesla is a very easy adapter to use and requires no delay.

Still have an adapter to manage and purchase. UWC is a small premium for many features that offer convenience, power sharing, and reduced expansion costs.

These prices are all a mirage. Do not believe your lying eyes. We were told that the American populace will not pay for the price increases.

My Tesla UWC cost $425 two years ago. Set up as a dumb charger, it works perfectly.

Check for local utility rebates. There is the 30% tax credit on parts and installation. Get it before the latter is gone. Or go ICE. I understand that EVSE tax credit will be replaced with a 70% tax credit for installation of home undeground gasoline storage tank and fuel pump. 90% tax credit if you install a coal-fired boiler to power gas pump.

I have next to NO experience as I just bought my first EV on Friday, and my electrician ran a 60A line to the front of the house.

After a bunch of research, I bought the Tesla Universal. Wired up easily, powered up easily, and the set up was easy (OK, I f'd up the initial set up with the Tesla app and it took three glasses of wine to figure out how to un F it.), and it works flawlessly. I like it...
