We are avid YouTube subscribers; opting for the Premium membership on the service to watch videos with little to no advertising. We also have both a Rivian and Tesla in our garage. It feels like there is an hourly glut of Tesla content that pops up on every new feature or hack that Tesla owner should try. When the R2 rolled out, Rivian had it's moment of celebration with an onslaught of videos from our cheering section covering the launch (those now seem to be quieting down). The Autoline Daily vlog gets more into the (daily) financial stability of the industry.

A video popped up on my feed over the weekend that has a different vibe to it; about the overall automotive industry, how each century had their "start-up"s, and their failings. This century was no different, and the vlogger, SuperfastMatt, presented the overview of the EV segment that seemed to be proliferating in the early 2000's. He also focued on Rivian and what the R2 means for the company, pulling in the details we learned from the Autoline financials, and the feedback from the R2 launch.

I felt like I was watching something from outside the Rivian bubble. Overall a good, affirming video that tracks with my personal take on the brand and the company.

That’s funny, I don’t see a single recommendation for anything about either Tesla or Rivian in my YouTube premium feed.

I worry about the future of FORD, GM, Chevrolet...

I could go on but this is our new reality and it's not looking up.

Automobiles are by far the most complex mass-produced product humans have been able to create. Nothing else comes close. Which helps explain why no new ground up auto companies succeeded for over 70 years until Tesla. Even Tesla came close to failing. Looke like Rivian is doing a lot of things right ... but only time will tell.

The major headwinds are the self-inflicted poor economic conditions and the resulting high interest rates.

An R2 lease averages around $830 per month, while this same lease signed in 2021 would probably average around $525 per month. With all figures being equal except the interest rate being 3% instead of 10% today.

If Rivian is able to lease R2 at an exorbitant APR while increasing sales volume, isn't that a positive sign for the company? It shows demand is strong. I get why those lease terms are annoying for the consumer, but they're not a "headwind" for the business.

It's positive to see pre-orders being converted to sales, sure.

Do you think Rivian makes any more per signed deal with a 10% APR versus a 3% APR? I think Chase will.

Commercial aircraft are hand built in very small quantities. Some years back, to offset cost, we tried to sell 2 large systems developed for GM (engineering and assembly) to the big aircraft manufacturers. They had no need for such systems since they were not mass producing.
