Rivian R1T R1S Think it’s totaled? IMG_6544

Woke up at 1 am Saturday to the sound of somebody being chased by the police and driving their car into my yard and into the Rivian.

Will start the insurance process tomorrow. The guy fled on foot and the police caught him, so I guess when my insurance company gets the police report they figure out if he had insurance?

Sorry to hear. That looks bad. I would say totalled. It could always have been worse. I'm quite sure someone being chased by the police does not have insurance. Do you have any security footage? I hope the insurance company can get what they need from the police. All the best.

Afaik, if someone crashes while committing a crime, their insurance won't cover it. It doesn't matter if he had Insurance or not. It may vary by state. So your insurance has to cover it.

It looks totalled. Very likely there is damage to something structural. Sorry.

No. He scraped the telephone pole on his way into the yard and the impact from that blew the transformer and it took a day to get it back online and the Blink doorbell didn’t upload it (cause WiFi was off)
Also, my incident camera on the Rivian didn’t get anything. Maybe cause I wasn’t driving? It all happened too fast for gear guard I guess.

Since it runs I am 50/50. Rear door and hood look aligned so maybe the base frame and battery are fine. New door and front fender. Otherwise hard to tell what is underneeth.

Ouch! I think you want it to be totaled - I know I would.

Side impact can be really difficult to fix, especially if the impact affected the frame. The obvious door damage is the tip of the iceberg as the cliche goes.

A small amount of twist, or deflection on the frame can have a huge impact on the relative alignment between all 4 wheels and driving dynamics. It's not a matter of simple realignment of the wheels. It's all the geometric angles between all 4 corners.

Sorry to see and hear. Good luck

I definitely would rather it be totaled cause 1) I feel like it would never drive the same again and 2) I can only imagine the repair process will take forever.

the problem is that my lease is sub $600 cause I got back last May when they had allll the incentives and friends and family codes. There’s no way I can duplicate that.

Those were insane lease terms. I agree, would rather it be totaled because it'll never be the same. I unfortunately bought mine prior to Rivian offering a lease program. Got good pricing at the time but wish I waited for leasing. Best of luck with whatever ends up happening and be glad you weren't injured in the crazy ordeal.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Man - all I can say is thank goodness you weren't in it.

I'm 100% of the opinion it's totaled, and I hope you're able to get full compensation from his insurance to replace it.
