Obviously it's not throttle lag, but from a stop going WOT, I feel like there is a quarter to half second lag before the truck puts down power. I'm not talking a slow ramp up of torque or anything, it goes full out when it decides to go, there is just a small lag between foot down and neck snapped back.

I'm coming from a performance model 3, so I'm fairly used to the instant response. It threw me off a little that the Rivian isn't the same.

I'm curious if other Rivians are the same, or if there is something strange going on with mine.

Switch to Sport Mode.

Rivian has actual real drive modes with different throttle mapping for each, unlike Tesla. I have an M3 Performance too and the nonstop jerky throttle is annoying. I’d appreciate drive modes there too.

I learned on my First Mile Drive that there is also a pedal sequence to get the 3.1 second 0 to 60 time - and you have to be in Sport mode. I can't remember it off the top of my head. Maybe it's in the manual?

I have a Model 3 Performance as well. We're all in the same club apparently.

  1. Put in Sport Mode
  2. Set to Lowest ride height
  3. Left foot hard on brake
  4. Accelerator to the floor
  5. Lift off brake
  6. Hold on to your pistachios

Tried sport, still has the same lag. It accelerates as hard as the model 3, even in all purpose mode, but the lag is still present. It's very strange

Maybe you're just experiencing gravity. Model 3 is half the weight of a Rivian. ?

I'm assuming they purposely do this for safety reasons.

I dunno, it still accelerates just as hard as I would expect, there is just a very short lag before it does.

Sounds like you've got a dud. Sorry to hear about it. I'll take it off your hands for you, $50k. Great price for a lemon!

This is typical of anything I've driven. I assume the technical reason is doing debounce or filtering on the signal. Tesla likes to ignore convention with a lot of their software.

The momentary lag has been picked up on by a few reviewers. Some will notice it, others will find it imperceptible if they aren't told to look for it etc. Seems to be something inherent in all the vehicles produced thus far. Could be some background power ramp checks it quickly does once you hammer the pedal?

This makes sense, it would prevent people accidentally unleashing 800 hp when they hit a hard bump. I could absolutely see Tesla ignoring something like that.

Did you try it backwards - Any diff in lag? JK - it can be dangerous but it is a hoot and shocks the hell out of the passengers, I don't recommend doing it.

I know the feeling you describe, the response wasn't as snappy as my Taycan. The pedal definitely has some deadzone and isn't very precise. It's not terrible, it's just not very sporty.

It definitely isn't for safety, that's an odd thought. How would a delay and unexpectedly getting a surge of acceleration be safer than a consistent pedal?

It's most likely just some combination of the mass and tires.
