Overall I have really like my R1S but I went to put my Thule XXL box on top and while it looks small on the vehicle the rails are in a bad position for this rooftop box. This is the Thule I'm using Amazon Thule Force
I could not get the box to fit with the front and middle supports as the distance is an inch or two short. It does fit with the middle and back support but the hatch hits.
Two questions anyone get this box to work on theirs? If not what other large rooftop boxes work best? While I'm not sure I need one this large anymore with the frunk it is really helpful to throw outdoor gear for camping or beach days up on the roof instead of in the back.

It seems like Rivian should have offered a 4th crossbar location between the front and middle.

I have a much older version of a similar Thule rooftop box and I can move my mounts (via adjustment inside the box) to slide it forward. Does this version not have that ability?

It has that ability but I'm at the limit of where it can slide to fit properly. The front and middle bar is too far apart by an inch to fit and the back and middle bar this is as far forward as it can go. You can see in the second picture it is against the back backstops.

I have the next size down but had the same issues when installing. The upper back gate does not touch when open as long as the mounts are slid all the way back on the inside tracks of the box.

You actually wouldn't want to mount it on the front and middle rack points due to aerodynamics. The back 2 positions are best for that as long as you can get it far enough forward to avoid contact.

In your last picture the tail upper dose not seem to be touching your box just close. that's exactly how mine fits and just barley misses touching the antenna fin.

Hope this helps

The box has been pushed forward all the way as it is hitting stops on the back of the box (second picture). It hit the first time I opened the hatch and you can see it is angled downward in the pictures as I stopped it from opening any further to prevent it from hitting again.

The XXL is a foot longer than the XL. I might take a look at the XL as I don't think I'll need quite as much space with how large the R1S is inside compared to the Ascent.

What if you reversed it and put the "back" of the box in the front? Does that range of the mount locations better fit the R1S in this way?

There was a test done by a Tesla owner that showed better efficiency in that configuration.

Yeah, When I was fully loaded down I had the frunk full ( 3 queen-size air mattresses, 1 Paddleboard, bike pump, snowboard boots, and beach blankets) the 3rd row down for luggage, and kids' toys, the 2 front wheels from the bikes on the roof and food. and still had room in that area.

The box had 3 snowboards 2 snowboard gear bags and a full set of boxed pots and pans. 2 bikes on the back 2 bikes on the roof and the whole 2nd row inside was open for my daughter to relax

There is sooooo much room inside of these trucks.. I cant imagine needing the XXL box to be honest.

Part of it is being a Scoutmaster and going camping with 10-15 boys and only a 4-5 adults driving. We use up a lot of the seats and load up every available nook in the car with gear. The rooftop box made it where I didn't need to tow a trailer. I'll see how it handles in October when I go on my first camping trip with them.

I have the Yakima Skybox 18, and it fits well on the first two crossbar locations. Here’s a pic from a recent trip - 6 humans, one dog, one plastic kayak, two inflatable SUPs…

Thinking it through a bit more I think Rivian could fix this with an update to set a max opening of the rear hatch. Then it wouldn't open all the way and no risk of hitting.

I found this set up at Rack Attack.....seems to be attached closer to the front away from the hatch and antenna

With the XXL on my R1S, the rear gate opens, hits the XXL, then pushes the back of it up ever so slightly, then all is good. Seems to have no issues.
