I think we are actually getting a pretty good deal with Connect+. The cost to simply update the maps in my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is $150.

Agreed, Jeep wants $25/month just for basic connectivity including remote start/nav/Alexa Skills. If you want the vehicle hotspot, you need an AT&T data plan which is $10/month additional. So it would run you $35/month to get you what Rivian is giving you for $15/month. In fairness to Jeep, you don't really need any subscriptions at all because it has wireless Car Play and Android Auto.

I bought my Rivians without knowing how much Connect+ would cost. Without that information, one can't really make an informed buying choice. Through silence, Rivian just allowed people to assume what they wanted to assume in order to make the sale. It could cost $10 a year, or $1000. Most people hoped for the cheaper side. I was hoping CarPlay would be included in such an offering. But by keeping the details under wraps, Rivian kept customers buying cars without any uncomfortable conversations getting in the way of the purchase. Meanwhile Rivian steals bandwidth on my WiFi connection to upload who knows what.

You don’t need Connect+ for ‘data access to music streaming apps’, so that is an unreasonable assumption.
You absolutely do need Connect+ for 'DATA to access music streaming apps'. Word order matters.

I sincerely hope you're right that casting will work without paying for Connect+. But Rivian has been crystal clear that that's not the case. I guess we'll see in a month or two.

You need a data connection but it does not need to be connect+.

A couple of people without connect+ have confirmed they can connect the Rivian to a mobile hotspot like on their phone to stream the data.

Totally agree with you that it does not NEED to be Connect+ that provides the data connection. Phone hotspot is an alternative way to get the data connection and has been proven to work.

But DATA is a feature of Connect+. I don't think anyone would argue that fact. Casting is another, separate, feature of Connect+, as described in the list that I linked above.

Underrated point - Rivian still pays for your vehicle to be connected to the internet via cellular even if you don’t. There’s no reason to believe that won’t be the case for perpetuity and that’s surely an additional cost for them. Not sure if any other companies do this, but Toyota and Subaru charge a significant monthly fee just to have remote start. Compared to that nonsense, Connect+ is a bargain.
This guy gets it.

my wife’s POS Jeep 4xe charges $25/month for a hot spot and to remote start the vehicle. I’m honestly impressed that Rivian was able to keep the monthly cost down as much as it did, especially with unlimited hot spot data. It’s actuallly an insane good deal, you could use this as a hot spot for your house if you really wanted to lol. I truly don’t get the outrage of these people who drop 100k on a car but complain about the $12/month LTE connection fee. They are the the walking epitome of Penny wise, Dollar foolish

Seems fine to me. Chrome cast is not something that matters to me. I will take entrainment while moving over any of the 'parked' services.

To each their own. I've been just fine without connect+. It's not like the sound system in the rivian is great and I'm usually on calls or fine not listening to music anyway. If my kids want music they can activate their hotspot.

Indeed. With winter on the way, we could be looking at monthly fees to activate the heated seats and steering wheel. Launch mode? Sorry sir, that will be a $5 charge for each use.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if SOS calling requires Connect+, or can I assume that's working even if I don't have a subscription? That's one feature I can't quite test to find out ?.

Nothing wrong with the statement. I am happy to pay for connectivity because I knew it was a temporary free thing when I purchased the vehicle.

The same people who say I had no idea are the same ones who never read the manual, don’t know what plug the vehicle uses, how charging rates work, and ask where’s CarPlay. There are always people who don’t make informed decisions and that’s why there’s a forum like this give helpful advice.
