I'd be surprised if Rivian is beta testing covers in the wild without notifying the owners and getting a signed acknowledgment of a beta product going onto a sold truck. I'm sure the legal department would ___.
I believe we all signed something at delivery that we were participating in a beta program in general.

Boston SC told me the same thing three weeks ago when my truck was in for service. Said I was getting "the redesign". It broke IMMEDIATELY when I first tried to use it. Only the leading slat came out and none more. So I got that slat back in, then tried again, and it went crooked immediately and jammed.
Can you share the part numbers from your repair order?

I got my truck late September and the guide told me that I had a "newer" version which they've had more success with. He identified it by saying there are wider slats and fewer of them.
Can you share a pic?

I never had such a thing. No repair order that listed parts for any of my work

Looks like there are 8.5/9 visible slats (not sure how many there are under the cover). They're 6 inches wide... I didn't measure all of them to see if they're the same width though.

I'm curious what your wider slats look like. How many of them are there?

BTW, Rivian definitely doesn't stand for tough adventure....I love it, but that's not how I'd describe it at all. That's the primary conundrum and deficiency compared to alternative adventure vehicles, you have to/feel compelled to baby it. By that I mean, no armor/protection on bumpers or side rails, not field repairable, highly software dependent and potentially sensitive to sensor abuse, etc.

It's more like a Range Rover, you can take it off road, but if you want to do it without cringing you just use a Toyota.
There are 8.5 visible (so assuming 9) and at least three of them are 6" wide.

Fair, perhaps it's not a tough adventure. Call it plain adventure then (unless you don't care about tossing an expensive vehicle at some rocks), but it's definitely more sturdy than a Tesla and more adventure than a volvo SUV. Either way, the rest of the build quality doesn't make me feel like I have to baby it... the tonneau cover certainly feels like it has to be. I just refuse to do so :)

I hope it’s the new new design. They tried to install a new version in my truck last week, it broke on install. Guys said they are 0/5 on installs of the latest tonneau, they all broke on install. They couldn’t get the panels out even once to just keep it closed for the winter unfortunately. New rails and all.
If all of their prototypes continue to fail, I wonder if we ever get to a point where Rivian decides to just cut their losses and issue tonneau refunds, manual tonneaus, and offers to remove the automatic one. Or maybe they'll partner with an external tonneau maker to retrofit existing vehicles before they can completely redesign their own tonneau (without existing limitations) for future trucks.

I got my truck late September and the guide told me that I had a "newer" version which they've had more success with. He identified it by saying there are wider slats and fewer of them. I had read on this forum that there were various iterations but all are fragile. Which sadly goes against everything else the truck stands for: tough adventure.

While I haven't had any issues with my "wide slat" cover, it seems like it's only a matter of time. I don't try to baby it - on purpose - since if it breaks through normal use then i need it to break; if non-babying it breaks it then I need one that doesn't require babying.

Like everyone else, I'm very curious to see what the latest design looks like.
Pictures of this wide slat cover or it didn’t happen!

Sounds more like an ”undesigned” than “redesigned”!!!

Was thinking along the same lines today... it's effectively discontinued right now actually. People's trucks are not coming with the tonneau and the price is being subtracted from the total purchase price. The half-shaft issue is much more significant than the electric tonneau issue as is the leaning issue and the shaking steering wheel issue and the shattering roof issue. They also have a new factory in Georgia to build, plus the endoro motors and the R2 vehicles to build. Plenty of important matters need attention.. at a certain point it's time to cut bait and move on. Not saying the tonneau is at that point yet, but tonneau 2.0 has to be perfect with literally no failures from serial no 00001 on or it will be considered an epic fail.

I'll post them again - I added them earlier but sometimes the messages move around in order I've noticed. Now, are they actually any wider than others' slats? No idea :) That's what I was told but didn't have a different truck to compare with. For reference, my VIN is mid 11k

it’ll be interesting to see… they told me a couple weeks ago they were only able to lock it full open or full closed and wouldn’t be doing any repairs until they have a final fix… maybe crossed wires?
"final fix" may not be the actual new design. Just a tweaked version of the old design. I'm guessing that vehicles with the old design will just get a fixed version of it - but that when they offer the powered tonneau again as a new vehicle option, it will be an all new design.

Which will be fine if it consistently works...otherwise, they'll still be at square one with warranty claims. Personally, I don't care whether it's the old design and it works or a new design and it works. Either way is a victory! BTW...so far my current one works but it feels a bit like Russian Roulette each time I open or close it. As a result, I don't open or close unless I have to.

Where do I sign up? No, really.

Frightened of running out of dry lube while playing tonneau roulette.
