Regardless, the overreactions are hilarious, given there are other storage features, readily accessible by both driver and passenger. It's a false equivalent to 12V socket, since there are no other 12V sockets remaining.
I think it’s funny that any kind of questioning and curiosity classifies as an “overreaction”. This must affect you deeply

Maybe the gen 3 will have a glove box like the R2. Keeping my gen 1 till at least the gen 3 and waiting for 800v with better battery tech and charge curve. I’ll get over the under seat cubby delete with a more useful glove box. ?

The drawer where the camp speaker sits actually isn’t really functional. It locks every time you enter drive and cannot be unlocked unless you enter park. You can’t store anything in it unless you are 100% confident you will not need it while you’re driving, so therefore it can’t be used for something like sunglasses. At least that’s how it works in the Gen 1s, because I have a locking drawer that I can’t use because of this designed software limitation.
Mine doesn't lock -- I keep my sunglasses in there and regularly open the drawer to get them out when driving.

I don't use these cubbies under the seat because they're too small to hold anything. I wouldn't miss them if they were gone and I'm sure they save quite a bit by eliminating them.

I DO miss having a glovebox for documents. I bought one of the Abstract Ocean pouches that is designed to fit the driver's side drawer and keep my documents, tire gauge etc. in the pouch.

While they are at it, can they take away the glass roof and air suspension please? On a more serious note, I don't care if they take that little cubby away. My last car only had enough space for sunglasses. The R1 feels like a football field of space.
Honestly, I'd just take a traditional sunroof setup (one that opens) over the glass roof if it means I can get a glovebox and 12v under the dash. I have so much anxiety over that thing breaking some day. But the glass roof itself is a cost saving feature as well, I get it - at least it's cost savings in camouflage.

Saw that RivianTracker posted about the passenger cubby getting removed from new builds for cost saving measures… no glovebox and cubby removed too… how much are they really saving here?

WRONG. They put the 12V battery under the passenger seat. Probably had issues with people storing metallic things in those cubbies falling into the battery area.

I have one that doesn’t lock and one that does. The one that doesn’t lock stays secure but it’s just a super light 3D printed one. It’s not super sleek but does the job. My locking one is ABS and works perfectly with the design of the OEM system, and that’s the one that locks upon entering drive. Better to have a non-locking one right now.

i appreciate someone applying some common sense to this. With the 12V battery in there, it's probably not a good idea for people to be rummaging around and cramming that little compartment with junk. Although it's certainly an annoyance (I keep extra contact lens stuff in mine), Rivian could've spun this better. Just say why they removed it and not leave folks to speculate. Even if this isn't the actual reason it's a logical one, LOL. ?

Has Rivian ever really explained the removal of something before doing it? I think RJ subscribes to "act now, ask for forgiveness later".

I'm referring to the OEM one you get if you don't opt for the camp speaker. The OEM one does not lock. There's a function to "unlock" it on the main display but this allows you to remove the entire thing including the track it slides on. The track is what "locks" to the car. It doesn't prevent the drawer from working at any point.

The cubby is too small for anything but a microfiber cloth. I use the center storage for everything.

I won’t miss it whatsoever. Useless little cubby which never gets used by me. I’m all for cost cutting!

why are folks freaking out over two small cubbies that weren't that useful anyhow? they replaced it with the storage drawer, stop complaining.

if youre questioning how much can they really save with this small change, you've probably never been in manufacturing. it all adds up, every cent saved counts.

i think Rivian should continue to cut costs where they can. they need to become profitable. please focus on the big picture here.

but what if you opt for the speaker?
I'm sure all 3 people that opted for it will be very dissapointed :giggle:

In all seriousness I'm curious how many people ordered them. I have 2 firends with Gen 1s and they NEVER use them because they are such a PITA to pair and use.

It locks every time you enter drive and cannot be unlocked unless you enter park. You can’t store anything in it unless you are 100% confident you will not need it while you’re driving
It doesn't lock while you're driving (this may be dependent on if you have a speaker in there or not). I find it's a perfect spot to keep my NACS adapter

The under seat cubbies are both used for my and my BF's sunglasses. Registration paperwork goes in the center console, under the organizer.
