Recently I've been frustrated by how unresponsive the User Interface (UI) is in my Gen 1 R1S. IT seems like it's been getting progressively worse. It takes multiple presses on the UI buttons for the UI to respond. Page transitions are not fluid nor seamless. Although the lag is seconds or fractions of a second, they are annoying all the same, especially in a software dependent vehicle with a dearth of physical controls to common features and functionality.

I have been paying attention more closely to determine if I wasn't pressing in the correct spot due to parallax error, or if the UI isn't registering the touch, or if it's just slow. The UI registers the touch in the correct spot, the button give a visual cue that it's been touched, but it doesn't switch immediately. I can often register multiple presses before the screen changes.

It occurs for all screen, not just one in particular, and it happens when switching in quick succession from different screens. Once it "catches up" the performance improves, sometimes it doesn't.

Am I the only one with this problem? Is this something service can address? Or should I wait for the "Paperclip 3.0" to be release and ask it?

I definitely see this. I do not see lag once it sees a "push", but it often misses button pushes completely. I wish they offered an audio feedback for touches, I have this in one of my other cars.

You're not alone here :)
My experience was even worse. I got my truck in July this year running software version 2024.07.01. Once I was able to complete the ownership transfer and register everything to get the updates, It jumped to whatever was the latest in late August (I think 2024.31) and ohh boy... It was night and day.

I *think*, after the 2024.19 refreshed visuals update, everything became a bit more sluggish, but I'm not sure when it happened. But I can 100% tell you that 2024.07 was wayyyy faster than the current one.

Hopefully in the future with more budget, Rivian can dedicate a team for performance improvement in their software. If I were the one leading Software Development at Rivian, I would still focus in Features and Stability for now, leaving performance for a future cycle.

I agree. And I DO see lags after I’ve pressed the button. Like the heated seat button in particular. Press once and no response. Press a few more times again and it actually registered all of my input so it goes a full cycle.. level 1,2,3,off.

Swipe to the car information tab from the nav. Takes a few seconds to load.

FM radio takes like 10 seconds to show any buttons when I first get in in the morning.
Switch from FM to Spotify, again takes a few seconds to load.

My IT inner-self tells me that the infotainment computer's RAM capacity is on the low side, so it has to proactively free up RAM pages from memory, which causes a delay when opening new options/apps within the screen.

If you take the time to open EVERYTHING (Settings, Radio, HVAC menu, drive menu, etc, etc) and then you go back navigating between all of them, it's pretty snappy. It's just (in my case) the first load that is slow as hell.

So either: A) Low-RAM on the computer or, B) a VERY aggressive strategy of removing unused memory pages from RAM.

Same, for me it's progressively getting worse.
The last update especially was bad and using the garage door opener takes extreme patience.

Gen2 running latest software update & yes, got slower over the last 2 updates.
Despite the fact that I personally find it dangerously distracting to press the iPad (rather than have physical critical function buttons), this lag makes that even worse & extremely distracting & dangerous, particularly at freeway speeds in SoCal, imo.

There is a bit of lag recently. This is why I personally don’t care about a feature addition update at this point in time. I’d rather they release an update to streamline some things and address usability. Monthly cadence is impressive but difficult and they could use an update or two to get caught up.

I keep getting lag when listening to the Radio - then it freezes - restarts the UI for the small screen and the large screen media player - the toolbar disappears then it just restarts and loads. It's been since the last update - restarting R1S Gen 1 didn't fix it from happening.

Also the TUNE IN TILE VIEW is gross - the list views are all missing.

The thing that gets me is how INCONSISTENT these updates are.

As an example: Previous updates for some seemed to have fixed problems, but my firsthand experience was that it broke a lot of things (for me).

Then for some (like me) the most recent seems to have FIXED all of our issues (and in my experience, the UI is the snappiest it's ever been). SO, I'm on the opposite side of those here lamenting this update. This one is the best yet!

There's speculation that there are a few variances within board-level hardware that might be contributing to the divergence of experiences. I have no idea if that has merit, but I really wouldn't be able to understand what else could cause such a difference. I really hope at some point Rivian can figure out what the ghosts are within their systems and at least minimize the bugginess. New features are great and all, but not at the cost of legacy features malfunctioning or not functioning as expected.

Or Rivian can reallocate the existing UI programming resources from their Halloween theme department …

Under powered CPU/GPU doing more then it used to in addition to possibly RAM deprived? Would be kind of interesting if you could set the GUI detail level like in games so it would be a bit more responsive for the user vs more fancy graphics.

I'm on the RAM side, Because if you 'preload' everything, it's pretty smooth.

Under powered coders as well. Consider the amount of bugs and glitches we’ve had. The more features we get the more issues we see. I’m glad Rivian is a place where people can develop their skills, just wish they had some additional journey level talent there to guide them.
