I learned that in order to get the discounted rate with a monthly membership, that you have to start the charging first before plugging in otherwise we get billed the non member price. For instance 48c/Kwh vs 36c/Kwh was a difference of $6.21 in charge sesh, just in 2 rapid charges and it paid the $13 monthly fee. Thoughts?

That is exactly how it works, Can Confirm. It sucks when the session self cancels… then plug and charge takes over then you miss the discount. I’d like the option is disable plug and charge for the reason; or better yet tie our Tesla membership charge rate INTO plug and charge.

Yes if you charge for over about 130kw in a given month the membership is fully worth it.

I believe Kyle with Out of Spec (and maybe even Wassym) has said integration of the monthly membership with plug and play is coming in the 2024.47 update.

Yes this is how it works right now. Hopefully it will change in a future update like .50.

Thanks for posting this!

Sounds like getting a 1-month membership may be a good idea before taking a longer road trip. I'm currently planning a cross-country trip where I'm pretty sure it's likely I'd be charging at Tesla SCs numerous times. I've used them only once so far, but that was without the membership - so I know my A2Z adapter works file. Sounds like I may want to watch a video to be sure I don't screw it up and get charged the non-member rate. maybe a simple checklist.

When you say "You have to start the charging first before plugging in", do you mean to start it in the Tesla App first? I'm assuming that's what you mean, but I want to be sure I understand the procedure.

Thanks!

If you remove the payment card from the Rivian account, it helps prevent it from changing through Rivian by accident.

You're right, in the Tesla app you have to pick which charging station you're gonna use. For instance I pick the Bluffs SCs, pull up to a stall and it would be say 2C. I select it then tap start charging before connecting it to the truck. To prevent a accidental charge through Rivian I removed my payment card.

Absolutely no need to do that. Just remember to do it right. It’s not hard. Keep valid payment on the Rivian account in case you do need to charge at RAN, or as back up should Tesla app ever fail to initiate.

Those rates just seem like highway robbery - literally. An ICE truck can refuel for that much or less - at least I've been able to in the past in places like AZ and FL. I know it costs $$ to install and maintain DCFC stations, but at these rates, they must pay for themselves pretty quickly.

Hopefully, as we see more competition we'll see the prices drop. At home, I'm paying about $0.108/kWh.

Concur ^^^ We took a 500 mi RT trip in WA state this weekend and Tesla charging (without membership) was more per mile than my ICE Ram 2500 Cummins. :-/

Lessons were learned.

How big is your battery? Did you do that in the Rivian? I know Silverado's have a 200KWH battery, but the max pack is only 140KWH. Theoretically if you hit the charger driving a Rivian at 0% and charged up to 100% at .37KWH X 140(max pack) it would be $51.80 unless I'm missing something? Trying for figure out how it was so much, as I regularly will run my truck with the large 130KWH battery down to single digits on road trips and with the tesla membership at .38 kwh, have never hit $50.
