My answer is "no" and I'd buy whatever is cheap with good reviews on Amazon. They are all about the same. I have a $100 portable 32a from eBay that's just as good as the Rivian and Tesla portables. Actually better, I can set the charge current on the device itself before connecting it.

Do not buy the Rivian wall charger. I've had mine replaced once, and the new one has crashed three times, with no notifications, leaving me uncharged in the morning. It's garbage.

I would go with the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, or any highly recommended wall mount charger. Maybe I haven’t read enough about it, but I don’t see the benefit of the Rivian wall charger over anyone else’s, especially at nearly twice the price and when you’re operating in a multiple-car, multiple-brand, multiple-standard environment.

I have a v1 80a Tesla Wall Connector in my garage at home since 2013, and it still works fine, with a Teslatap Mini adapter for my R1S.

Back in 2013 I had a NEMA 14-50 plug installed at a cabin in the woods shared with my extended family for my Tesla Model S. Over the decade since, several family members bought Teslas and I got the R1S. In late 2023 I upgraded to the Tesla UWC for faster charging, a longer cable, compatibility with both standards, and no need to dig a mobile connector out of the trunk or frunk every time. Plus the possibility of power sharing across multiple TUWCs in future if needed. It’s been flawless for various Teslas and my R1S since.

Get something cheap or something versatile.

Tesla. Pickup at your local Best Buy. Also, any contractor will be familiar with the installation process.

Hi all,

I have a R1S and a Model Y and will be installing a hardwired wall charger on new 60a circuit.

Looking for advice on going with the Tesla or the Rivian wall unit. Pros/Cons and actual experiences charging cross brand.
Get the Tesla one. It’s better with cable management and overall just smaller footprint.

Neither, this is what I have installed,
Autel Level 2 Home Smart EV Charger NACS, Up to 50Amp, Hardwired 240V EV Charge Station, Indoor/Outdoor Car Charging Station, Flexible 25-Foot Cable, Compatible with Tesla https://a.co/d/9loMIoZ
My wife drives a Y, with a deposit on an R2, I drive a low vin 22 R1T. I use an adapter and am happy not to send Elmo any money.
BTW these go on sale frequently for $400
thank you. Just put a deposit on and ordered out R1S yesterday and I’ve been doing lots of comparing and came to this conclusion yesterday afternoon. Slept on it overnight before placing an order and this just confirmed it. I really appreciate your post.
